This essay is worth 100 points and is worth 35% of the overall grade in the course. This essay will be 5
pages long (four pages of text, Works Cited page is page five), approximately 1000-1200 words, and
typed in the correct MLA format. In accordance with the ENGL 1301 Instructor Guidelines/Policies file
(see file in Blackboard), a paper not the correct format will NOT receive credit.
To earn credit for this assignment, the essay will be attached – as a Word Document or as a PDF file –
through the assignment submission link the course’s Blackboard shell. Repeat: The attached file must a
Word Document or a PDF file. If you are unsure, or using a different format, ask the instructor.

Here are the prompts for Essay #3:
❖ In both Ha Jin’s “Saboteur” and Kurt Vonnegut, Jr’s “Harrison Bergeron” depict government officials
in unique ways. Write a comparative analysis of how the authors show the power of the authority
figures. Your paper should show specific examples from both stories to support your thesis/claim.
❖ Both stories have a similar plot/conflict device – man vs society. Both stories also champion the
rights of an individual. Write an argumentative analysis that proves which story, Ha Jin’s
