Your research paper for this class will focus on a claim of policy of your choosing. A claim of policy argues that a certain problem exists and there is a needed solution for it.The purpose of the paper is to select a claim of policy, preferably one that impacts you personally, to either argue for or against. The choice can be an existing policy or one that you believe should exist.
This paper requires you to synthesize a variety of sources into a coherent, well-written essay. Synthesis refers to combining sources and your position to form a cohesive, well supported argument and accurately citing sources. Your argument should be central; the sources should support this argument. Avoid merely summarizing sources. Explain as specifically as possible what you want your audience to think and how they should be persuaded when you argue your claim of policy.
I encourage you to take the time to critically think about the laws and policies that affect you and are worth arguing about. The topics below, although not simplistic, are often immediately selected argument wise. As such, ideally they should not be your first choice because I’d like to encourage you to dig deeper to tap into your curiosity and critical thinking skills. However, should you wish to explore them, you must have a very clear and focused research question.
Important stuff to remember about writing arguments
Reflect about what you learned about claims of policy and rhetorical analysis. As part of your argument you are required to provide factual evidence that supports your policy. This means that you have to look at the subject matter from every angle possible and make an informed decision. When advocating for or against the policy, then you have to provide sustaining examples as to why your policy is the right choice, or not. Consequently, you have to be well informed –meaning your ethos as a writer is front and center– about the policy that you are advocating for and provide relevant examples to persuade your reader.
