Causal arguments are based on the relationships between ideas or events, many of which are not always obvious. Your essay should argue as to the causes or effects of some occurrence, decision, or event around which there is considerable controversy. Your essay should make a claim or take a position on a causal issue. For this essay, your prewrite step and drafting step will be combined—one part, hand-written and exploratory, the other, type-written and formally developed and organized. You may do a limited amount of research in order to support your position—say 4-5 sources maximum. You must use at least 3 sources from the scholarly databases in the library, Proquest and Ebsco, and cite each at least once in your paper. Use your research sparingly and skillfully, and document your essay using the MLA documentation style we have been learning. Follow the directions on pages 278-290 and those from our lectures and class activities to help you develop your claim and organize your essay. A few tips/reminders: Avoid the disallowed topics: Abortion, Alcohol (especially with regard to legal drinking age), Birth Control, School Bullying, Crime, Capital Punishment, Is cheerleading or any other activity a sport (this is a 0900 level essay), Drugs (especially topics dealing with the legalization of pot), Conspiracies, Death, Dying, Disease, Global Warming, Gun Control, High School Stereotypes, Music Censorship and Music Piracy, Political Bashing/Rants, School Uniforms, Sweatshops, Teen Pregnancy, Texting/Driving, anything you wrote a research paper on in high school, or other stale or overly broad topics typically found on “term paper” websites. Students should avoid “surfing the web” for a topic. The instructor reserves the right to reject a topic or exact a grade penalty for poor or inappropriate topic choices. If a student is unsure that the essay topic is appropriate, please contact the instructor for advice/approval well in advance of the due date. Do not write an informative report. Your essay should be an argument. Use the Language of Cause and Effect to lead the reader. Do not forget to submit your essay to a tutor around the time you finish your Review draft. Do not forget to submit your final draft by the due date and that it will be scanned by Urkund. Choose one of the following topic areas for your essay and then develop an original argument. 1. Write an essay in which you analyze a social problem and argue its causes, centering the argument on a single strongest cause and supplementing it w/ additional contributory causes. You may also do the opposite, starting with the problem and arguing about its likely effects or unintended consequences. Remember that you are not writing an informative paper that merely lists scientific facts or likelihoods as causes or already known effects. Try to look at the whole of the issue and not just one aspect, but be selective about scope as these essays can become unmanageable quickly with too broad topics. 2. Analyze the causes/reasoning OR potential effects behind a recent specific decision by the federal, state, or local government. In this case, make the effects (or potential effects) the basis for your disagreement. Again, be cognizant of the differences between main/contributory effects, immediate/remote effects. Finally, be reasonable in your approach to avoid tainting your argument with bias. You must write an argument and not merely an informative report. 3. Inductively analyze the possible causes of a current puzzling trend or unusual area of interest. With any topic, be alert to the presence of possible causal chains and be sure to effectively rebut counterclaims. For example, not everyone would agree that the primary effect of privatizing social security would be a more stable retirement picture for all. Many older Americans are very uncomfortable with this idea and might feel their own, much nearer, retirement plans will be threatened. In this hypothetical discussion, you would have to address that concern or viewpoint and numerous others.

There is a review of important theoretical literature, however there is limited integration of research into problem-related ideas. The review is just partly focused and arranged. There is research that both supports and opposes. A summary of the material given is provided. The conclusion may or may not include a biblical integration. |
