Should a company prioritize organizational commitment or identification for employee retention?
Chapter 9 in the textbook makes point to distinguish commitment and organizational identification (O.I.). Commitment comes in three forms: normative, continuance and affective (which shares characteristics with O.I.). Commitment tends to correlate with less emotional characteristics, staying with a company because the pay or benefits are too good to leave, staying simply because they think they’re supposed to, or simply just because they want to. These forms of commitment tend to be less volatile, and have a more consistent rate of employee retention, however they may not have as high of a correlation to productivity either. Organizational Identification may exhibit higher levels of motivation as they feel more strongly oriented with the company. The company’s goals become the employee’s goals which further drives their productivity. The downside is that this level of commitment is much more on an emotional level and is subject to high variability.
At this point for the employer it may come down to the question of do they need a higher level of job satisfaction and productivity or a lower or more steady turnover rate.

How can a company boost the attitudes of employees who genuinely dislike working?
It is important for companies to have companies with good attitudes. This leads to good morale, production, and higher job satisfaction from all employees. Employees with bad attitudes have a negative effect on both themselves and the people around them.
However, some individuals dislike working. In some cases there are no jobs that will make these individuals like work. This dislike of work leads to a bad attitude. So what can a company do with these employees? Is a bad attitude enough for them to be fired? Would they need to be put in a position where they can’t affect others’ moods? I feel like this is an important problem for companies in our current era because people take much less pride in their work than before.
