If we were on campus, our Mike , Rev. Seth A’dayel, would have been leading us through 45 minutes of meditation. You can still do this at home! Meditation is an effective way of handling stress as a college student, and it gives you a chance to breathe deeply and really clear your mind of all the clutter. There are many apps available for meditation, yoga, and learning calmness. Other ways of handling stress are physical exercise, music as a coping strategy, artistic expression, prayer, and also spending time in nature.
Personally, I like to get up early in the morning and spend quiet time in prayer as the sun rises…usually with a cup of coffee and my three little dogs. If the day becomes stressful, I try to escape a bit into a quiet room and think about my favorite place (usually the beach), breathe deeply, or go on a walk.
For this discussion, please share how you manage stress in your life as a college student. Also, please share any tips you have for your classmates which help reduce the stress you may be experiencing now that that you are transitioning to learning on line. Your initial post to this question should be completed by Sunday of this week, and you should respond to two other classmates (feedback posts) by Sunday evening (the end of week 11) by midnight. Your feedback posts should include 2+2 – two compliments or encouragements and two suggestions or questions. Let me know if you have any questions.
Managing stress is not the easiest thing to do but everyone seems to have their own ways. Some of my favorite ways to manage my stress are meditating, praying, working out, painting or other crafts, and sometimes even crying it out. As far as meditation, I wasn’t really into it until my junior year of high school when I became my yoga teacher’s student aid and she taught me how to meditate correctly. Meditating just brings me into a completely different realm where I just feel completely free. Furthermore, I come from a very religious household so praying is just something that calms me down and really reassures me that once something is in God’s hands I will be able to do it.
Working out is one of my favorite ways to relieve stress as well because all the stress and anger I have built up is so easy to release by just going on a run blasting my favorite music. It also makes me feel as though I’m by myself for that moment in time so it gives me time to reflect on my own thoughts. As far as painting and other crafts if I have the supplies for it, it is something that calms my nerves down as well. Finally, as for crying it out, sometimes the only way I can really relieve my stress is by listening to sad music and just letting it out. Most people look at crying as something so negative when in reality it is one of the best ways to release your emotions. Lastly, as for anyone who is stressed about online classes, I highly recommend drinking tea as well as giving yourself a break every day from homework to go outside to get fresh air and you’ll feel great.
I believe that if you have a healthy environment for your own self and figuring out what stresses you out then you can reduce your stress by avoiding them or using something to reduce your stress like a stress ball. But everyone deals with stress, but some people deal with their stress differently deal than others or do not know how to relieve their stress. As a college student is especially important to figure out some strategies for your stress. My first strategy to relieve stress is talking to my friends or family because they could give me some advice how to calm down and find figure out a solution or make me feel happy versus thinking about the stressor. In high school, whenever I or my friends were stress out, we would have small party and just talk about our stresses then write them down on a piece of paper and burn it in a bonfire.
The second strategy to relieve my stress is meditating with my mom because she loves to meditate, and it makes me feel calm if that does not work, I will take a walk. When I found out that we were doing online schooling I was kind of scared of it because I have never done it before, I like face to face learning, it became stressful for me, and figure out what to deal with all my classes and I was working. But after talking to my dad he told me how to figure out my schedule with work and classes. Now we are in this pandemic most of the time, I have been doing a lot of zoom calls with friends and meditating with my mom.
