Using Counseling Frameworks and Ethical Principles
our textbook addresses several types of counseling or theoretical frameworks (e.g., decisional counseling, person-centered counseling, logotherapy, etc.). Review the case study “Working with Family Values, Cultural Issues, and Depression” below (also located in your textbook): Mrs. M emigrated from India with her husband 20 years ago. They have three grown children. Mrs. M was referred for services by her primary care physician, who was worried about her depression and stress, caused primarily because her mother in India had just been turned down for a second green card and visa. Mrs. M’s mother had lived with them when the children were teenagers and had returned to India without renewing her green card. Mrs. M was alternately angry with her mother over her negligence and worried about how she could take care of her now. Now, select a counseling or theoretical framework and briefly describe how you would apply the selected framework to the case study. Discuss any ethical or legal principles that could impact your approach to this case. In your responses to your peers’ posts, address how your differing frameworks impact your approach to the case study. How are your approaches different or similar?
My initial post
From our reading in the framework, I believe that the Cognitive Behavioral Theory (CBT) is the best approach. This will allow Mrs. M to understand what she is thinking about her situation. CBT according to our reading is “often interpretation or reframing is useful in understanding what is going on in the client’s mind and/or linking the client to how the environment affects cognition and behavior” (Ivey, 2016). From my understanding of the scenario on what the doctor said the Mrs. M, is possibly depressed and stressed about her mother’s condition and situation with getting a second green card and visa. This situation has led to anger towards her mother about the green card and lack of being able to take care of her mom due to being in a different country. I will want to use CBT, where she can talk about her angry feeling with her mom’s lack of responsibility or other concerns and pent-up frustration. After venting those frustrations, we can find a way to approach each one and make a plan. With a plan in place this will allow stress relief with goals to help move forward. According to helping Mrs. M. with her mom, we must become familiar with the situation in the government and culture to obtain a green card. There is a possibility that she may not get another one due to not following procedures. If this is the case, we will need to help Mrs. X find a way to take care of her mother being in different countries. Due to Mrs. M being from a different culture, I am not very versed in. I will want to find someone who is aware of the culture and heritage to give me guidance or form a team effort to assist Mrs. M. I want Mrs. M to know that I am concerned about her and her mother’s well-being.

Peer Post to review: Autumn
Mrs. M is experiencing a lot of stress over the fact that her mother was not able to come back from India. The fact that a solution is not able to be resolved easily is frustrating her. I believe because of the symptoms it would be best for her to have cognitive behavioral therapy. I think it is best to work on helping Mrs. M, with her anxiety and explain to her that, although we cannot do anything to immediately bring her mother back, we can find some healthy ways of channeling her frustration into a healthier way of communicating. There is a review of important theoretical literature, however there is limited integration of research into problem-related ideas. The review is just partly focused and arranged. There is research that both supports and opposes. A summary of the material given is provided. The conclusion may or may not include a biblical integration. |
52-49 points
The content is somewhat ordered, but there is no discernible organization. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on may sometimes distract from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
