Urban Walking Tour
The goal of this assignment is to construct a walking tour of a neighborhood or urban area in the Tampa Bay metropolitan ara. You should design your walking tour in such a way that it appeals to urbanists, and urbanophiles generally.
Your walking tour should highlight key sites or settings that can offer analytical insight into some of the urban dynamics of that social space. You will do this by drawing on one or more key ideas or concepts that we have discussed throughout the semester. Ideally, your walking tour will be organized around one or two key themes.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Given our current circumstances with COVID-19 and official recommendations to stay home and practice social distancing, I understand that visiting a particular area or neighborhood to construct the walking tour may not be possible or advisable. For this reason, you are more than welcome to do a walking tour of your neighborhood. Or, you may complete a virtual walking tour of an urban area through Google Maps. In the past, one student also submitted a walking tour through an urbanscape of a video game… the options are endless – feel free to get creative.
PROJECT FORMAT:
Feel free to use whatever format is most exciting, comfortable, and/or convenient for you. You can – for example – put together a document, use a PowerPoint format, produce a Prezi presentation, or construct a brochure [all of which has been done in the past].
SUBMIT A FINAL PRODUCT THAT INCLUDES:
A creative title page, including your name
A summary, including –
A brief description of the neighborhood or urban area – how would you describe it to someone who has never been there? A brief explanation for why you selected this particular urban area or neighborhood. Here you should include an overview of the analytical ‘theme(s)’ that organize your walking tour.
A page listing descriptive data about the area, such as socio demographics, as well as relevant historical facts, any other useful, interesting, or relevant information (these should be cited). A map indicating the key sites you have selected, and the intended route for the walking tour (#1-5)
An annotated listing of the 5 key sites or settings. Each of the sites listed in your walking tour should be accompanied by 5- 7 sentences in which you explain the significance and relevance of the site for understanding the urban dynamics of the urban area or neighborhood. Your discussion of each site should be consistent with one or more of the overall analytical themes of your walking tour.
EXAMPLES & TIPS
All of the following example assignments received an A grade (90-100).
Most often, points are lost for:
Not including a map showing the 5 sites
Not signifying the intended walking route between the five sites on the map
Not including analytical themes or concepts from the course in the overall project design and/or discussion of each site

This assignment will take some time to complete, and will require some research and brainstorming. Give yourself plenty of time to work on this. Refer back to the textbook, supplemental lecture slides, and your course notes.
