UNC335 Soundscape Scarily Listening Diary Paper
Task is to produce a composition that recreates one of your listening diary entries. This should be a visual composition, such as a sound map or illustration of a scene. It could be ethnographic—a series of short interviews you conduct with people who were involved in a sound memory or experience. Or it could be written, as an essay or poem that further explores an experience.
For my assignment I am picking to do a 25-30 line poem that relates to the listening diary below. This class is all related to sound so if you can throughout the poem relate it to sound.
My Listening Diary: The criteria for selecting a listening diary entry are largely subjective. Pick a scene that you believe others will find compelling. You have poetic license to adapt the scene to amplify the drama. You are encouraged to think of the scene as a narrative that you are “transducing.”Alone in the house, I decided to play Call of Duty Warzone, one of my favorite games. I listen to the sounds of the video game.
The atmosphere and dread makes the game feel like a horror game. The approaching yet inaudible footsteps of the lurking enemy increase the aspect of the warzone and increase the players’ struggle for survival. Although the volume is loud, the footsteps are quiet, while the footsteps are loud at other times. The sprinting open doors and the shattering glasses from the window are so noisy it continues to echo in my ear seconds later.
I feel threatened as the enemy’s footsteps are silent while the teammate’s footsteps make a stomping sound from my teammate. I say to myself that I would like to hear the enemy approaching from a distance rather than hear loud stomping sounds when they are close. The military effects in the game create a feeling of unsetting vibrations and sounds of high amplitude with rapid changes in harmony and frequency. Ten minutes into the game, I am exhilarated by the chaos, uncertainty caused by the sound effects, and adventure, which create a sense of horror and desire to win. The aspect of hiding low on the rooftop or at the corner, with three plates of armor, while waiting for the enemy’s footsteps inaudible sound is exciting
