Mia Vasquez’ post; The vaccine war
When I had my first child, I was really young. I pretty much went along with what the pediatrician recommended. As she got older, I started to form my own opinions. By the time my second daughter was born I trusted myself more and more confident in my decisions. I never once questioned vaccinations. As a child my siblings and I developed chicken pox. It was something all kids got. Now there Is a vaccine that prevents that. I am pro vaccine because I believe that the risks of not being vaccinated are too great. I am not willing to allow something harmful to happen to my children and I could’ve prevented it. Vaccines protect children from a plethora of diseases such as polio, whooping cough(pertussis) and mumps. There are some diseases that the body isn’t able to fight on its own . According to the The Mayo Clinic natural infection might provide better immunity than vaccination however there are serious risks. For example, natural chicken pox infection could lead to pneumonia (Mayo Clinic, 2021). In my opinion I don’t think risking any infection is worth my child’s health. I also do not want to put any other children at risk because my children are not vaccinated.
https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/infan… Hannah’s post: I would say that I am pro vaccination because of the research that has been done to prove that they can save lives. At the beginning of the video, there was discussion about how vaccines have been able to prevent 16 diseases in children and vaccines can increase a person’s lifespan by 30 years. I think that it is safe to say that if there is a cure to diseases from spreading, it important for people to get vaccinated if they don’t have any underlying medical conditions. There was this virus called the rotavirus and the vaccine for this disease has decreased the hospitalizations. This just shows how a vaccine can prevent major side effects of the disease and keep people from becoming extremely ill. I personally belief that the hour to one day side effect of a sore arm is much more acceptable than getting the actual disease. For example, when I got my COVID vaccine I got a fever that lasted for less than 24 hours. A fever is no worse than getting COVID itself. People who aren’t vaccinated for COVID are at risk to getting sever symptoms. My dad is fully vaccinated and he just lost his sense of smell and taste when he got COVID. The vaccination prevented him from getting severe effects of COVID which can include getting hospitalized. There was research done in the video which looked at children who got the MMR shot and children who had autism. There was a conclusion that children who didn’t get the shot of MMR had the same risk of developing autism as those who did. This proves that the vaccine for MMR didn’t have correlation with kids developing autism. Another note to keep in mind is that if a group of people who are vaccinated and there is a virus, the virus can’t spread with the people who are vaccinated. The vaccine prevents the spread of the virus. Whereas if people aren’t vaccinated, the virus will spread. Alexander’s post: I am personally pro vaccination but only on certain diseases. I think if a disease is either permanently with you if you get it, or can cause serious harm or discomfort than you should get a vaccination for that disease. Paul Offit is a doctor from the children’s hospital of Philadelphia. He says vaccines have increased the overall lifespan of people by thirty years. Polio would paralyze tens of thousands of people before there was a vaccine. Now with a Polio vaccination you would be safe from contracting polio. This is just one example of how a vaccine has saved lives. When you are born, you are given a hepatitis vaccine if your parents decide they want you to get it. You will also be scheduled for further vaccinations throughout your childhood years. When I have children one day, I would like for them to be vaccinated to protect them from these potentially life threatening diseases. Measles is the most infectious microbe known to mankind according to MIT writer Seth Mnookin. This is just another example of a disease that you should consider being vaccinated from. Some parents choose to keep their children unvaccinated. This can be a problem especially if they decide to travel as a family. They could contract a disease while on vacation and bring it back to their home and schools. Any other children that are also unvaccinated would be at risk. This is how outbreaks start.
There are a few institutions that work to prevent outbreak. These are the national institutes of health, the food and drug administration, center for disease control and prevention, and large vaccine manufactures. Nevertheless, there will always be parents who decide to vaccinate their children’s and there will be others who do not. This will cause debates between the parents who are taking different sides. Do the parents of vaccinated children want to send their child to school with kids who are not vaccinated? It is a scientific fact that the vaccines are effective in reducing the number of people infected with disease. Dr. Arthur Caplan is an expert on the ethical aspect of getting children vaccinated. He believes that the reason a parent would choose to night vaccinate their child would be because the parent had never seen the disease first hand. They might not be aware of the affect the disease would have on their child if they got it. A huge reason for why a parent in this generation hasn’t seen the disease first hand is because of vaccinations. People who were born from a previous generation had to live in a time when there were no vaccinations. They experienced the pain of some of these diseases first hand.
Parents of non vaccinated children are arguing that diseases such as polio have been eradicated in the United States for a long time and there is no longer a reason to get vaccinated for the disease. Even though the disease might be eradicated in the United States it is still a problem in other parts of the world. Travel can cause the disease to make its way back to the United States very quickly. It is worth noting that there are potential side effects when getting a vaccine. There could be swelling, and some pain that can last a few hours to a day. It is also possible that someone can get an allergic reacting from the vaccine. I think the risk is small and the benefit is much larger. Dr. Anthony Fauci who is the Chief Medical Advisor to the President of the United States agrees with me. Scientist in the United States have learned a lot about vaccines. At they were causing brain damage in very rare cases. They researched what could cause that and worked to erase even the small amount of risk for this happening. Ultimately, severe adverse affects from vaccines are so rare in some cases they cannot confirm if it’s the vaccine causing them. Ultimately I am pro vaccine.
