the poem “Strange Fruit,” by Abel Meeropol
You are using the following three works as inspiration: the photo of the lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith 1930; the poem “Strange Fruit,” by Abel Meeropol that was inspired by this photo; and the song that he turned the poem into that was sung by Billie Holiday.
For the project, I would like you to use these works/ one of the works, as inspiration for something you create. How have the works spoken to you? What did they say to you? What story do they tell about the lives of African Americans? What issues do they talk about? Racism? Violence against Black bodies? Oppression? Discrimination? Absence of justice for black people in America? Now think about what you can create, as a response to these works and their themes. Can you write a poem? Do you wish to write a song? A spoken word? DO a drawing ?
Have an interview with someone about the meaning of these three works? Maybe you want to write a reflection paper that considers the meaning and significance of these three diff works. What about a collage of images that speak a thousand words about oppression and racism in America and,you write about? How about you compare two images- the lynching photo and a photo from the recent protests? Perhaps, the lynching photo and the one of the police officer with his knee on George Floyd’s neck? Maybe ,
compare two protest songs, The Strange Fruit , song and a protest song from today. And yo u discuss how songs have been used, since slave songs, as forms of protest.r the Final Project
