Choose a character in the comedy of manners, The Importance of Being Earnest, that makes the audience laugh. Write an essay in which you analyze why the character is funny and how he/she contributes to the deeper meaning of the work as a whole (i.e., targets of satire or themes).
High-level comedy changes one’s perception of his/her society, causing a person to re-evaluate his/her position in that realm. In the comedy of manners, The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde elicits this type of “thoughtful laughter” by exposing inconsistencies in Victorian morality. Through Lady Bracknell’s character, Wilde produces a comedic response by employing satirical techniques to illuminate the shallowness of upper-class Victorians.
