High-level comedy changes one’s perception of his/her society, causing a person to re-evaluate his/her position in that realm. In the comedy of manners, The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde elicits this type of “thoughtful laughter” by exposing inconsistencies in Victorian morality.
