The impact of long-term corticosteroid use
Write a Literature Review of 4-5 sources. You should choose a topic related to your field of study. Your topic should be specific and should focus on the literature (research) from your field. Thus your topic shouldn’t be a report about well-established ideas–that is it shouldn’t be about what Diabetes is. Furthermore a good Literature Review focuses on an area of controversy, uncertainty, or debate within the field.
Goals: 1) Understand a particular genre of writing required in science and medical research and clinical professions
2) Develop and expand critical thinking and analysis abilities 3) Practice correct format for citations 3a) You should follow your field’s expectations for citation (see the NIcholls Library here for what fields use which citation system). 4) Develop understanding of content area of one area of interest in science OR Practice writing up individual research about one content area 5) Learn difference between peer-reviewed articles and other types of writing published in research journals. More Details As you compose your Literature Review you should both summarize and analyze the literature (the articles/studies). What do they say? What did the researchers do and how? What’s the outcome? How does the research help us understand best practices or basic science better? What do we as a field need to do next?–more research, better implementation of what we already know, etc? NOTE: 1. Make sure the journals are academic journals that are peer reviewed. The databases should tell you. If you can’t tell, go to the journal’s home page (Google it!) and in the “about this journal” section see if the journal says that it is peer-reviewed. 2. Make sure that you can get the full article, not just an abstract. 3. While other literature reviews can be used, make sure all of your sources are NOT literature reviews. Use other literature reviews for context, to help you get your bearings, and to help you find sources. In short, try to do your own reading of the literature the literature reviews you’re reading feature.
So What’s a Good Topic? EXAMPLE OF BAD TOPIC: “Obesity and children” (too broad, vague, could write a book) GOOD TOPICS: “Effectiveness of two obesity programs on childhood weight” OR “Effectiveness of nutrition education on childhood obesity” OR “Impact of exercise vs. diet programs for childhood obesity” OR “Comparing the impact of three diets on childhood obesity rates.” Logistics 1,550-2,000 words Use the citation system of your field–see the Nicholls Library’s guide (https://nicholls.libguides.com/citation) Due December 30, 2020

RUBRIC | |||
Excellent Quality
95-100%
|
Introduction
45-41 points The context and relevance of the issue, as well as a clear description of the study aim, are presented. The history of searches is discussed. |
Literature Support
91-84 points The context and relevance of the issue, as well as a clear description of the study aim, are presented. The history of searches is discussed. |
Methodology
58-53 points With titles for each slide as well as bulleted sections to group relevant information as required, the content is well-organized. Excellent use of typeface, color, images, effects, and so on to improve readability and presenting content. The minimum length criterion of 10 slides/pages is reached. |
Average Score
50-85% |
40-38 points
More depth/information is required for the context and importance, otherwise the study detail will be unclear. There is no search history information supplied. |
83-76 points
There is a review of important theoretical literature, however there is limited integration of research into problem-related ideas. The review is just partly focused and arranged. There is research that both supports and opposes. A summary of the material given is provided. The conclusion may or may not include a biblical integration. |
52-49 points
The content is somewhat ordered, but there is no discernible organization. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on may sometimes distract from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
Poor Quality
0-45% |
37-1 points
The context and/or importance are lacking. There is no search history information supplied. |
75-1 points
There has been an examination of relevant theoretical literature, but still no research concerning problem-related concepts has been synthesized. The review is just somewhat focused and organized. The provided overview of content does not include any supporting or opposing research. The conclusion has no scriptural references. |
48-1 points
There is no logical or apparent organizational structure. There is no discernible logical sequence. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on often detracts from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
