How can you apply Wolters discussion of the Grand Narrative to your research area? Specifically, how does this lens give you insight into how to approach research in your individual research area?
As I finished reading Wolters’ piece this week and giving due diligence to introspection on the question being posed in this weeks’ discussion; a few particular elements stood out that will greatly impact my continued approach to my specific area of research. First to clarify my area of research, I am interested in the epidemiology, clinical assessment, and integration of safety protocols within public and private educational settings as it relates to those afflicted with mental health and subsequent mass school shooting behaviors. The goal of my research would be related to the prevention, early identification of risk factors, and implementation of appropriate mental health safety protocols to reduce frequency and severity of mass school shootings across the globe.
With that being said, Wolters (2005) made a profoundly interesting argument based on the notion of sanctification. Wolters (2005) stated, “Sanctification is the process whereby the Holy Spirit, in and through the people of God, purifies creation from sin on the basis of Christs atonement and victory”(p.90). Consistent with the Grand Narrative of creation, fall, and redemption, working within the field of mental health and researching specific constructs of mental illness and impacts on society; I find encouragement and hope in the concept of sanctification and pray that my work can in some small way “purify” how we handle, teach, and rehabilitate a “falling” population.
Conducting research in my specific area of interest can be viewed through the lens of a Christian practitioner that is attempting to confirm, enlighten, and strengthen the belief that God’s initial work was one of a sinless beautiful creation that can one day be validated and “redeemed” by Him alone and by doing His work.
Secondly, Wolters’ spoke clearly about the concepts of “progressive renewal” and “reformational” worldview. More specifically, Wolters (2005) states, “Nothing moves or exists or develops except in response to God’s creational demands. God’s ordinances make themselves felt in even the most perverse human distortion”(p.93). Be a mental health clinician who works in the public school system, my fears and concerns are very real regarding integration of mental health and school safety. Just yesterday, I along with my administration, pulled a student from a classroom who had a fully loaded 9mm handgun in his waistband.
My area of research surrounding mental health and mass school shootings is a clear depiction, indication, and severe “human distortion” away from God’s initial sinless creation. My thoughts on research and implications on society of how to “fix” these “distortions” are at the forefront of my doctoral research endeavors. Wolters (2005) states, “a Christian rejection of evil must always lead to a cleansing and reforming of created structures”(p.93)
My research in this area is in alignment with this biblical challenge in that, while I clearly rejection the evil of mental health as it relates correlative behaviors seen in mass school shootings; I cannot just stop there! I must attempt, in some small way, to provide psychological scientific truths based in a biblical worldview, in an attempt to restore, “cleanse”, and “clarify” this clearly negative “human distortion.” Wolters’ piece, when viewed from this lens, challenges me as a Christian practitioner to make change in this world through psychological truths based in biblical truths, while remaining aligned with His redemptive nature.

My area of interest is Industrial-Organizational Psychology. I/O psychology is better known as the study of work where scientists study how individuals can optimally benefit the organizations they belong to (Boundless, 2021). The I/O scientists would oversee programs to improve organizational productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness. This would include employee selection. Psychologists help the leadership determine what job applicants will be high-performing employees, then develop a plan for selecting the best candidates. The I/O psychologist would assist in the development of training programs.
This would look at platforms that garnered the highest level of employee engagement and combine them with relevant departmental information for use in training programs. The portion of I/O psychology that seems the most interesting to me is driving employee performance. This can be accomplished by helping employers develop performance management tools; taking what superior performance exists within the organization and working to improve the median performance metrics.
This is accomplished through using the psychological methods and principles of psychological research leading to more evidence-based tools and solutions for human resource management. I/O psychologists depend on the advancement of scientific psychology but there is no replacement for the unconsciously perceived and the integrated symptomatic signs that will allow the best candidates for a position to stick out (Reinhart, 1948 pg.12).
Endurance, perseverance, work, and struggle. These are the words Paul uses to help us understand the path to success. In the Grand Narrative, Jesus takes us by the hand and gives us purpose that is not without struggle. When we emulate Him we can expect hardship (Matthew 5:11). He shows us that the path to be who we were intended to be is a challenging one.
Who God made us be is specific to every aspect of who we are. We can use our strength selfishly and victimize those around us. Or we can take our place in the Grand Narrative and function in the purpose of God. You are a cog in the wheel of God’s great plan of redemption. You have work to do. You have the innate responsibility to set in order the world around you.
You have the freedoms you are given in order to discharge your responsibilities (Peterson, J. B. 2018). You are given a piece of the world to be responsible for. In I/O psychology we can examine the strengths and weaknesses of the individual in order to make them more effective. The organization will succeed by improving the performance, satisfaction, safety, health, and well-being of individual employees (Boundless, 2021).
This area of study is important to me because corporations, although technically persons, are not people. People make up these organizations and a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Therefore, my outlook on I/O psyche is a little different with the Grand Narrative in mind. Generally, an I/O psychologist looks at the organization. I am more focused on the life of the individuals and how it relates to their individual function within the organization.
My work would look at individual productivity as it related to personal development. Im not just how they performed at work but at their life as a whole and how they could improve holistically in order to be better at work, home, and life in general.
