The Environment and Society

• Explore the environment & society portal: http://www.environmentandsociety.org/ (links to an external site.) To understand more about your options on the portal for exploration read the “about” section:  http://www.environmentandsociety.org/about (links to an external site.)  Keep in mind that you must be able to: (1) describe what resource you looked at on the site, (2) explain how you found it, and (3) cite it in chicago notes & bibliography (also called chicago humanities) style.
• Select a resource on the site to read and connect to what you read about humans and the environment in weeks 2 and 3.   The required annotation is most easily completed if you choose one resourcefrom the site; however, if you select images then you may find that you would like to describe more than one.
• Review the annotation aids and chicago citation guides in the writing guides module .  Historians use chicago notes and bibliography citation style (also called chicago humanities).

Introduction :

This assignment is the first explorations assignment. For this one, i provide a website that contains extensive resources for you to explore. Subsequent explorations assignments introduce you to other sources and different source types. Through the exploration assignments, you learn how to analyze and evaluate sources and connect them to our course themes.

The environment & society portal offers many resources. You may choose to look at the resources by contents in the virtual exhibitions (digital resources organized round a theme), published journal articles and books, and multimedia items such as images, podcasts, scholarly texts, documentary films, early modern broadsheets, and modern comics.

You may also choose to use the exploration tools: timeline tool, map viewer, and/or keyword explorer (under “exploration tools” on the home page). These tools allow you to access the contents in different ways.

Historians use a citation style called chicago notes and bibliography. That is what you will use in this class.

For your post :

Label each section of your post with the labels below: annotation; connections; research methods; and citations.

1. Annotation

The  writing guides module  includes information about annotations. For this discussion, your annotation tells what your source is about and how useful you find the source. Thus your annotation provides a summary of the topics in the source and evaluates that coverage. Your evaluation relies primarily on the knowledge you gained from the course readings. Write in complete sentences and complete the annotation in no more than 250 words.

2. Connections

In a sentence or two, explain how the source you annotated adds to what you learned from course readings. Thus you establish the connections between the source and course readings. Those connections are clearest when you cite course readings.

3. Research methods

Describe both the source type you annotated (such as a virtual exhibition) and how you found your source on the environment & society portal. Your description should be thorough enough to allow a classmate to find the source.

4. Citations

Cite sources in chicago notes and bibliography style. The  writing guides module  includes aids and information about chicago notes and bibliography style.

5. Type the above information in your word processing program to allow you to save your post as a document there.
6. Copy and paste the text into this discussion as your post following the instructions below.
