Each week you will be asked to read a chapter from the text AND view a text related video. These videos are intended to enhance your learning of the course concepts. In addition to this, you will view one film per week that will offer an application of the textbook material. At the close of each week, you will be expected to submit a thoughtful discussion post in which you apply concepts presented by the material and make connections between texts. As the course progresses you will also be able to make connections with DN as well as assigned podcasts.
This week’s film: No Limits
Begin your post with a brief history of the drug Thalidomide, provided by the film. What company manufactured and distributed the drug; what was it designed to treat? Who created the drug and what is significant about his personal history? When did the drug appear and in what countries was it distributed? Why was the drug never released in the U.S.?
Eight Thalidomide survivors have been selected to be highlighted in the film. Choose two survivors featured in the documentary and respond to the following. (A) What were the circumstances of their birth and how did their parents deal with their child’s disabilities? (B) What were the circumstances of their childhood; how did they grow up and with whom? What were they told about themselves and their disabilities growing up, and how did those messages/attitudes impact them as adults? (C) Explain the accomplishments they have made in their adult lives and how they have coped with the challenges they have faced.
