For this paper, state a clear, concise, and contentious thesis dealing with the impact of a recent (post-2015) or imminent innovation. Your innovation could be related to the Arts and Humanities, Business, Education, Engineering, the Health Sciences, the Sciences, or the Social Sciences. Your paper should make a claim on whether you think this innovation is beneficial and/or harmful and explore. There is one exception: NO ELECTRIC VEHICLES.
For this assignment, you will write a paper at least 500 words long. Be sure to submit this draft via Canvas as a file entry. Note that this paper is a diagnostic, so the grading will be lenient and you will have an opportunity to revise for a better grade. The word synthesis means to bring ideas together to form something new – like a new theory or a research question. YOU MUST INCLUDE AT LEAST TWO CRITICAL SOURCES.
You will structure your paper as follows:
INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPHS: Introduce the topic in one or two paragraphs and lay out the technology you’re discussing, including a brief overview of the pros and cons, and then state a clear, concise thesis. You want to clearly define the field(s) that this topic belongs to and any relevant terms, but don’t run too far over a page.
BODY PARAGRAPHS: Lay out the benefits and drawbacks of the technology as it relates to the discipline you’re discussing. Then, using logic and other sources, try to come down clearly as either for or against the technology. Some nuance is permitted in your answer, but the firmer your position, the more persuasive most readers will find it. The focus here is on mediating a synthesis conversation between these sources using your own intellect, logic, and research; you should follow this mediation with a clear verdict and recommendation on the technology.
CONCLUDING PARAGRAPHS: This is where you will present the insights, or “so what,” regarding this synthesis. What was learned by bringing the articles together in conversation? You want to move to the new things that can be concluded due to the synthesis and, ultimately, present a direction for future research or legislation. Where can future research go? What are the implications of your argument? How might your argument apply to other areas of interest in this or other disciplines?
