SWOT Analysis of Leadership Skills and Abilities
Background of the Assignment You’ve read how a SWOT analysis looks at standing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. A SWOT analysis is an assessment tool that organizations use to identify what the organization is doing well and where it can improve. Using the same framework behind a company SWOT analysis, you will select a corporate leader or a manager and conduct a SWOT analysis on this person. Keep in mind that you are not reviewing the leader’s performance; rather, you will explore information about the person, the work s/he does, and how s/he does it. Here’s a common misunderstanding about this assignment: You are conducting a SWOT on a leader (a person) NOT on a business. Therefore, your analysis focuses on the behaviors of the leader rather than the environment of the business. Goal and Value of the Assignment The goal of this culminating project is to allow you to consider how leadership theories can be applied to analyzing a leader. Demonstrating these skills can help you develop your own leadership abilities and learn to identify areas where you can improve. This project requires the analysis of a leader and a synthesis of your knowledge of leadership theories in a report that a consultant might provide to an organizational board of directors on the potential hiring of a new CEO. SWOT Concepts as Applied to Leaders Consider the following definitions as they apply to analyzing a leader: Strengths – real or perceived positive behaviors/actions or business results that internal individuals believe about the leader. Weaknesses – real or perceived negative behaviors/actions or business results that internal individuals believe about the leader. Opportunities – real or perceived positive behaviors/actions or business results that external individuals believe about the leader. Threats – real or perceived negative behaviors/actions or business results that external individuals believe about the leader. External Individuals – could include, but are not limited to, external stakeholders, customers, sub-contractors, shareholders, external vendors, competitors, industry association members, government regulators, external compliance officials, local politicians, customers, the general public, and reporters. Internal Individuals – could include, but are not necessarily limited to, regular employees or contractors, supervisors, consultants serving the organization, middle managers, etc. When a company is working to hire a new CEO, it may perform a leadership SWOT analysis to determine if that person will fit within its culture and potentially perform as expected. For this assignment, you will be performing a SWOT analysis on a leader that you select and make a recommendation to the board on whether to hire the person. Steps to Complete the Assignment Select a person high within an organization such as a CEO. This will be the person to analyze and use the template [link to template document] to perform the analysis. Use the template to complete a SWOT analysis. Based on your research of the person you selected, answer several questions to help you identify whether the board should hire or not while supporting your ideas with APA inline citations to the readings and your experiences. Make a recommendation to the board summarizing why you recommend this person and how the hiring of this person may solve the problem identified in the introduction. Review an example of a leadership SWOT analysis. The example does NOT contain everything required as stated in these instructions. Include a References page. Formatting Requirements Your document needs to contain: a cover page the page numbers in the top right corner page margins of Top = 1”, Bottom = 1”, Left = 1”, Right = 1” a references page in APA 7th edition format at the end of your document to list properly all resources that you used to prepare the project/paper
