This is my feedback for the research, please follow the guidelines and work on it properly. It’s a master’s degree program and my lecturers are very strict. You must follow their guidelines. Thanks
Hello Justina, in the proposal there are a lot of stsments that are not supported with evidence or put into context, for example,
When Mathematics was introduced in the education curriculum in the 1970s, teachers were provided with the necessary technology such as calculators to support the students.
Which curriculum was maths introduced to and where is this information from?
Similarly with the methodology section you state that you will analyse the data using the the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach, what is this and how does it work? Also where is the reference to support this research decision?
Why have you included sections on the teaching materials and the implementation of a learning portal and how this might be ethically compromised but nothing on the ethical implications of the research.
You also state
Culture, public policy, technology, social economics, and demographics are some of the subcategories of external variables. Psychological processes such as semiotics, self-image, motivation, perception, learning, and attitude all have an internal influence.
what does all of this mean for the research? You need to focus on how the research will be carried out and justifying, with references, why you have chosen this topic and why you have chosen to research it in a qualitative way via interviews
regards
Feedback from the second lecturer on the research proposal
Get an article on the qualitative method and read about it
Get three articles on teacher perception and the barriers of technology, and read them, because it’s obvious I didn’t read
He said my main research topic is too long, it should be linked to the main topic
Get rid of the following;
He said I should read 3 to 5 empirical studies (research papers)
What is peer review articles?
What is an empirical study (Add empirical studies)
He said my Methodology section should have lots of academic references at all times because its part of a masters program requirements
Do not say how many participants said that I have two research questions in page 2 which is wrong
There is a giving format for the research proposal which include the following
Professional context; he said I can just write two lines
Organizational context; two lines, which is how the study will be conducted by 20 classes……..
Policy context; write two lines about how educational policies prevail, mention educational policies which are now in place in that school
Suggestions on my sub research topic
1 what are the benefits of using technology to support children?
2 What are the various obstacles that prevent teachers from supporting the technology use among children?
Please below is a guideline for the research proposal
Extracts from a research proposal
Research title
This will be a working title which is best worded as a question which should be in two parts, the first part is a statement of the topic and the second part is the research question
Professional identity and professionalism in prison education: are prison educators’ perceptions of their professional identity influenced by the policies and politics of the penal system?
Abstract
This is an overview of the contents of the proposal and should be 100-150 words. Imagine that you have to describe your research to someone in 30 seconds.
The propose research will be an investigation into professional identity and professionalism in an educational organisation and whether this is affected by policies and organisational politics. The research will focus on a specific groups of educators who are teaching in a prison education department in the north of England. It is proposed that the research will be undertaken by gathering data via in-depth semi-structured interviews with prison educators. The data will be then be analysed using a thematic narrative approach. My current role as an insider-researcher gives me access to potential participants but also presents ethical issues regarding confidentiality and anonymity. These issues have been considered and possible solutions identified.
Introduction
This section introduces the research area/topic and briefly states the aims of the research, the rationale for the research and the main research question and sub questions, which can be a bullet point list.
The aim of the research is to investigate the perceptions of a group of prison educators of their professional identity and what, if any, influence the policies and politics of the penal system may have on those perceptions. The issues that are faced by the prison education workforce are not widely known, as prison education is hidden from public view. Its purpose remains not only a mystery to outsiders, but often also to those responsible for its management and those employed to deliver it.
Conceptualisation
This section is where you define the key concepts that are part of your research, you can also include references to the key theories in this section.
The concepts of professional as an occupational category, professionalism as the process by which individuals become professionals and professionalisation as ‘the process by which occupations become professions’ (Millerson, 1964: 10) originated in profession discourse. The research will use Foucault’s (1969:1972) theory of discourse and discursive formation to trace the historical development of profession discourse. To examine the early concepts of ‘professional’ and ‘professionalism’ it will use the works of Spencer (1896), Tawney (1921) and Flexner (1915).
Professional Context
This section is relevant if the research is related to your professional practice as a practitioner, for example as a teacher or a manager in a setting or as a volunteer. In this section you can refer to yourself as I, if this section is not relevant to your research then do not include it.
I began my teaching career in 2000, when I was employed by the local adult education (AE) service to teach maths in a local prison education department. My current position is …..
Organisational Context
This section is relevant if the research is related to, or being carried out in a specific organisation, e.g. a school or college. You should include a brief description of the setting, without naming it, and what its purpose is, if this section is not relevant to your research then do not include it.
The research will be taking place in a male local prison in the north of England. The research location has recently undergone a number of changes that have impacted on educators and their managers. For example, the capacity of the prison was recently expanded by 40% with the building of four new wings and an extension to the existing facilities, including new classrooms.
Policy Context
This section is relevant if the research is related to a specific policy or group of policies which can be cited. If this section is not relevant to your research then do not include it.
The prison education workforce are bound by three sets of policies, those applying to FE, those applying specifically to prison education and those applying to the prison service. The recommendations of the review, Unlocking Potential: A review of education in prisons (2016) were that prison education should include more personal and social development (PSD) courses and more arts, music and sports activities alongside the basics of maths and English.
Methodology
This is the section where you outline the philosophical approach that the research will take along with the methods and data collection strategies that will be used. You also need to include details of who the participants will be, how they will be chosen and why as well as considering some of the limitations of the research and the ethical aspects of the research. This might include your positionality and/or role as an insider-researcher. Each of these research decisions will, be dealt with quite briefly in order to stay within the word limit but each one needs to be justified with references to research theory and practice that are to be found in research texts. Subheadings can be used, as in the example below, to give structure to this section but are not compulsory.
