This week we are discussing experimental designs, specifically the between-subject design. It is important to understand the varying designs as scientist and junior researchers. As we continue to learn more about the intricacy of behavior, we will test our own hypothesis and those of our peers. To do so we will have to design experiments and document the facts of the research.
Between-subject designs are exactly as they sound, they are experiments where we compare the results or differences between subjects. This is an effective way to conduct research and coming to conclusions which in turn could be able to generalize those conclusions to society (Meyers & Hansen 2012). Between- subject designs can be used to compare one type of condition versus another on separate groups, and then that data can be used to extrapolate which then can be applied to larger groups of society.
An example of between-subject design could be testing varying, perhaps three, medications between different subjects and comparing the results between them. From my understanding this type of design would include a control, and treatment to test condition.
Also, as with all designs and experiments the subject will have to be randomly assigned, to not confound the research. The subject would also have to be randomly sampled or pulled from society to provide the best possible result to be compared and applied to our diverse society.
This is effective to compare the treatment condition with the control condition and the effects on the different groups. In the case of testing drugs or medications it is specific and more ‘pointed’. My understanding is that this can be used to quickly test hypothesis’ and then use the results to explain groups of subject behavior. This type of design would be beneficial to my research and testing of my hypothesis of color affecting moods in human behavior.
I could have the experiment test subjects on bright colors and happiness and in another group test dark colors and sadness. Or I could test subjects on what color they associate with happiness and in another group what color they associate with sadness.

This week, we dive into between-subject design.
I found this topic particularly interesting. Professor Michael R. Allen from the University of Wisconsin writes it best when defining the term between-subjects design. Allen states “Between-subjects is a type of experimental design in which the subjects of an experiment are assigned to different conditions, with each subject experiencing only one of the experimental conditions.
This is a common design used in psychology and other social science fields.” (Allen, 2017)Undergraduate PhD Psychology student at Princeton University Julia Simkus also defines between-subject design as follows.
“A between-subjects study design, also called independent-groups, is one way that researchers can assign test participants to different treatment groups. In a between-subjects design, each subject is assigned to only one treatment condition, and researchers will compare group differences between participants in these various conditions.” (Simkus, 2022)
Simkus also provides great examples for between-subject design, as follows “For example, assume a psychiatrist is looking for new medication to treat patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
She has four potential options of medications to help the patients with their OCD. In order to determine which medication is going to be the most beneficial for her patients, she creates four testing groups among her population of patients.
Each group receives one of the four medications. Researchers then analyze these patients and collect data to test their anxiety levels. The psychiatrist can use this study to decide which medication is best for her patients with OCD.” (Simkus, 2022).
Lastly, we can see that this methodology is one that can be very beneficial in psychology to be able to understand the best course of treatment for patients via live results from very specific studies done at a set time. With the between-subject design, we can understand how to better treat patients in real-time. Thanks.
