“The mother that provided love and comfort had a more secure attachment with the baby monkey in the experiment. This demonstrates that providing comfort, companionship, and love plays an instrumental role in attachment, above even providing food (Baker, 2010).
In order to grow a healthy attachment between a parent and child, researcher John Bowlby stated that two things were needed, “The caregiver must be responsive to the child’s physical, social, and emotional needs; and the caregiver and child must engage in mutually enjoyable interactions” (Spielman et al., 2020, Section 9.3 Stages of Development, para. 34).
Various attachment styles were identified by Bowlby, ranging from secure, which is the healthiest, to other less healthy types like avoidant, resistant, and disorganized. Children with secure attachments exhibit behavior like viewing their caretakers as a protective figure that they can rely on to calm stress (Spielman et al., 2020, Section 9.3 Stages of Development, para. 37).
On the other hand, avoidant types are less reliant and reactive to their parental figures. Resistant types are clingy, while also avoiding and disregarding parental figures. Disorganized attachments are, as implied by the name, very erratic. These children were very volatile and unable to control themselves, which Bowlby saw as a result of their unfortunate attachment. These adverse types can result from uninvolved parenting styles and other various parenting problems.

In Europe, a woman was near death from a special kind of cancer. There was one drug that the doctors thought might save her. It was a form of radium that a druggist in the same town had recently discovered. The drug was expensive to make, but the druggist was charging ten times what the drug cost him to make. He paid $200 for the radium and charged $2,000 for a small dose of the drug.
The sick woman’s husband, Heinz, went to everyone he knew to borrow the money, but he could only get together about $1,000, which is half of what it cost. He told the druggist that his wife was dying and asked him to sell it cheaper or let him pay later. But the druggist said: “No, I discovered the drug and I’m going to make money from it.” So, Heinz got desperate and broke into the man’s store to steal the drug for his wife. Should the husband have done that? (Kohlberg, 1969, p. 379)
