SPC 3272 Rhetorical Foundations Communications Essay
Spring 2022
Length: 450-600 words (roughly 1.5-2 pages, typed double spaced; be sure to include a word count with your name, date, course title, etc.)k
Please note: Papers must be submitted through Canvas in order to receive a grade. Do not email your paper directly to me. You should also turn in a hard copy in class. If you do not submit a hard copy, you will not receive any feedback on your essay. You may, of course, discuss it with me during office hours.
This assignment gives you the opportunity to explore in more depth some element or aspect of the public sphere that we have covered in class or in the course or optional readings. Since this is a short paper, you should choose a specific topic or idea we have discussed and do some more research and reading on it and write a short essay that explains what you think is important about it and why. McKee, for example, writes about the close relationship between the media and the public sphere.
You might want to explore this relationship in a little more depth, or talk about how the emergence of social media has accentuated or changed this relationship. You might want to look further into Warner’s notion of “a public” and “the public,” and what this means. You might want to look further into the roots of the public sphere in the Enlightenment.
Or you might be interested in the difficulties of public deliberation in contemporary democracies. Remember, these are examples of things that one could write about. You should choose a topic that interests you. You should look for at least one scholarly source beyond the assigned course readings to support your claims. Scholarly sources include peer-reviewed articles in scholarly journals and books published by university or scholarly presses.
On-line encyclopedias, course or professor websites from FAU or other universities, proprietary websites, undergraduate class papers, and other resources of this type may provide background but are not scholarly sources that support your thesis.
Since this is a short paper, you should keep your writing concise but pithy and sharply focused. Be sure to use an idea or concept from the course materials and readings and to choose a specific focus. Essays that speak only in a general way to issues surrounding the public sphere or that raise issues that are not part of our class materials and discussion will receive a grade of 75 or lower.
Be sure to document any ideas that you reference, either quoted or paraphrased, from any outside source. When you are referring to course readings, you need only an in-text citation (e.g. Bohmann 27) and need not list time in an “Additional Works Cited” page at the end of your essay.
