INTRODUCTION
IP Telephony also used synonymously with VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) simply refers to the technologies that do not use the traditional public switched telephone network but rather use Internet protocols packet connections to exchange various forms of information including voice. What happens is that the internet can make calls without having to rely on the public switched telephone network because the calls are transmitted in the form of packet data on different shared lines.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The problem is that younger adults have adopted IP Telephony without considering any potential risks that arise. Given that IP telephony is cheaper than the telecom network most students consider this the better option for them and are ready and willing to let go of the Private Branch Exchange in their campuses for this new technology. While this technology is not new it has been popularized in recent times by the constant use of computers and telephones. It is no secret that the most common form of communication is via telephones. This is normally outrageous expensive to maintain and sustain. (Hersent, 2015)
A local Public Switched Telephone Network for example cost Arkansas State University a total of $ 55000 per month and when the university switched to IP telephony they only spent $6000. This is a huge difference in expenses and must be considered by all users of PSTN. For a younger adult the reality is that they do not have income and if they do it is mostly not enough for luxuries. Thus the main intention is to cut costs as much as possible. There perception of IP Telephony is therefore that of a life saver.
At one end is a service that charges hundreds of dollars to sustain and yet has numerous limitations to it. On the other end there is a service that offers numerous benefits at a lesser cost. The obvious choice can be deduced from this.
Some benefits of IP Telephony for a student include, firstly, IP Telephony allows a younger adult to make long distance calls at a reduced rate as compared to the rates charged by PSTN. Public Switched Telephone Networks normally calculate their rates based on the duration and the distance between the phones. Most college students do not live at home and thus calling home becomes very expensive. (Khasnabish, 2013)
The distance and loneliness is evidenced a lot and a lot of money has to be saved before long calls are made back home. IP Telephony allows such students to communicate with their families at much minimized costs and this helps reduce homesick and loneliness of college life. Another benefit of IP Telephony for students is that the quality of the voice and sound is much improved. As discussed earlier IP Telephony transmits calls in the form of packets of data and through this it becomes easy to preserve the sound quality especially in long distance calls. (Borko Furht, 2015)
Long distance calls via Public Switched Telephone Network mostly have an issue with the sound quality because this is determined by the flow of the call from one cell tower to the other.
Lastly the IP Telephony is important for younger adults because of the minimal expenses in hardware switches. The truth is that college students already have phones that are internet enables. It requires very few hardware devices to support the Voice over Internet Protocol. This means that the transition is very effective, reliable and cost friendly. For college students the fact that Voice over Internet Protocol is not regulated by the Federal communication commission makes it a more suitable option. While morality is still an issue to debate among colleges’ students a lot of them still engage in illegal transactions and immoral dealings. Lack of regulation and monitoring by the commission simply means that they are free to say anything, send anything or even conduct illegal transactions without having to worry that they are violating rules of the commission or the fear of exposure.
However the Internet Protocol Telephony does not benefit the younger adult without potential risks. One of these disadvantages is that the IP Telephony is ineffective during internet outages. These outages are not rare and thus calls are not reliable for all situations. Internet Protocol Telephony is not only limited by complete internet outages but also mere technical abnormalities on the internet and the bandwidth. This abnormalities cause the performance of the Voice over Internet Protocol to be compromised. The aim of this research is to understand the sudden rise of IP Telephony among younger adults and why it is so appealing to them. Secondly this research aims to uncover the disadvantages of this technology to the younger adults and the potential security risks.
