RWS 280 Essay #3 Writing Strategy Spring 2020_____
I: Introduction/Beginning
Try using an epigram to introduce theme and tone. Your introduction should include the following:
Present the general topic, including general information about the two sides of the issue.
Identify the author’s thesis. (Use a quote is possible to clarify his thesis.)
II: Body Paragraphs/Middle All paragraphs should include a topic sentence. Assume your audience is unfamiliar with rhetorical analysis and the text; explain what the author is doing, but emphasize analysis. Be sure to identify, analyze and evaluate the following parts.
This is where you will address Part 1 of the prompt.
This part is where you will focus on the first strategy.
This part is where you will focus on the third strategy.
You will first need a topic sentence to present the focus of this paragraph: the author’s purpose, goal and audience information. Then clearly state the author’s purpose and goal, and then detail who reads this publication. This will require some research regarding age, gender, educational level, etc.
This should come after you present goal since goal focuses on what the author wants the audience to do. Be sure to include the reference to the article “Title” (or author if there is one) and the in-text citation for where you got this info.
Be sure to include this on your Works Cited page. Then give a little commentary about how knowing this info helps you understand why the author presents their article the way they do. Be sure to use the above key terms.
In a separate paragraph, you need a topic sentence to present the focus of this paragraph: the author’s use of one rhetorical strategy. Provide a definition of this strategy and how it is used in general (see “Introduction to Rhetorical Strategies.” Be sure to include the in-text citation AND list this on your Works Cited page). Identify one specific example of this strategy (use the quote).
State WHERE this strategy occurs in the article and the point the author is trying to make at that place. Explain HOW the author sets up the strategy. For example, is it used to present a claim, or is it part of the evidence to support the claim? Or is it part of the author’s introduction, or is it part of the counter-argument? Explain WHY you think the author uses this strategy in that specific place. What purpose does it accomplish?
In another paragraph, here’s where you will evaluate the effectiveness of this one example of this strategy. What is the strategy’s strength and overall effectiveness on readers in general and on you? How do you respond to this strategy?
Did it open your eyes or change your mind about anything? IF this example evokes an appeal (not all strategies will) then detail how this is done. Focus on specifics. Do NOT just say that it is pathos. Detail what KIND of pathos. If it’s an appeal to the readers’ emotion, then what KIND of emotion and HOW this happen?
And remember, you are making a claim about this strategy and its effectiveness, so be sure to make references to the article to support and/or illustrate your claim.
In a separate paragraph, you need a topic sentence to present the focus of this paragraph: the author’s use of a third rhetorical strategy. Provide a definition of this strategy and how it is used in general (see “Introduction to Rhetorical Strategies.” Be sure to include the in-text citation AND list this on your Works Cited page).

For an A paper, you will do the same for a third example of this strategy.
C-This part is where you will focus on the second strategy.
In a separate paragraph, you need a topic sentence to present the focus of this paragraph: the author’s use of second rhetorical strategy. Provide a definition of this strategy and how it is used in general (see “Introduction to Rhetorical Strategies.” Be sure to include the in-text citation AND list this on your Works Cited page).

III: Conclusion
* If using a framing device (like an epigram or a vignette in your introduction), signal your conclusion with it. This is how to use a vignette or epigram as one kind of framing device.
