After working over 20 years in politics, including the last 14 years running my own consulting firm, I have decided to sell my firm and go into youth ministry.
There are many reasons why my wife and I have decided it was time for this change in focus, but none more significant than the growing societal stress felt among our youth.
Over the past few years (especially the last few weeks), America’s teenagers have grown increasingly depressed and anxious which has led to a spike in suicides and drug overdoses[i]. There is no doubt that the rise of social media has been a direct causation for this tragedy, but polling data has also shown more kids identifying themselves as either atheist or agnostic[ii]. It is my view that the lack of faith in their lives has not allowed them to effectively deal with this rising anxiety and depression.
There is no doubt that finding Jesus not only assures eternal life (John 3:16) but will also equip our youth to deal with the false promises of this world (Isaiah 58:11; 1 John 2:15).
The primary way to address this crisis in our country is to dive in and do the work through youth ministry. As Stier mentions, we must not just talk about doing ministry but actually act on it[iii].
The Lord Jesus instructed us in the Great Commission to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28: 18-20) and we must begin with our children. We can grow in the Lord through our daily quiet time, church participation and small groups but if our kids are not raised to be disciple makers than the number of Americans (and all people groups) who consider themselves atheist will continue to rise. This work must begin, and it must begin now (Matthew 24:14).
Engaging in youth ministry is going to be a sacrifice for anyone who partakes in it. Perhaps we now have less time for our own hobbies and interests. Perhaps our careers may suffer, or our golf game may deteriorate. But what sacrifice are we willing to make in order to raise up followers of Christ? Are we willing to sacrifice the way Abraham did (Genesis 22) or even the way our Savior did (Matthew 27: 32-50)?
The answer for any true follower of Christ should be a resounding YES.
The Lord dramatically changed my life when I accepted Jesus into my heart on Easter 2007 and I want to share this good news of the Gospel to as many people as possible starting with our nation’s youth.
Putting resources into the present youth is important in developing the group of Christs. Training youngsters in the congregation to develop in their relationship with the Master sets them up to serve Christ in everything they do. Therefore, this sustains the assembly and permits the congregation to thrive.
Serving youngsters can’t just set them up to become future pioneers, yet in addition, permit them to add to the congregation. This is seen ordinarily in the Holy book, as God regularly utilized youngsters to do extraordinary things.
For instance, God utilized Timothy to minister and lead the Ephesian church when he was a young person. 1 Timothy 4:12 says, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.”
Nonetheless, there is much to be learned from the faith of a child. Matthew 18:2-4 says, “He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.’” Because of God’s heart for young people, it is important to recognize their value in today’s church.
Youth need direction and backing as they explore through the most testing piece of their turn of events and look to develop in their stroll with Christ. As per Jones (2017) a few services that have viably called guardians to connect effectively in their kids’ profound turn of events and how to grow better organizations among places of worship and homes.
Christ-like pioneers are expected to serve youthful individuals from the assemblage and help them to arrive at their maximum capacity. Youth services pioneers must be established in a scriptural establishment all together viably speak with youngsters. Furthermore, they should comprehend present-day impacts on Christianity, which permit them to relate to youth and construct significant associations with them.
