DULCE-Uses. Psychological testing in counseling is used to assess and to identify the mental proficiencies or deficiencies of a person. That is, to evaluate an individual’s mental status. The types of measures used to conduct a psychological assessment include “…written measures, formal evaluations, tests, and other instruments;” which may consist of problem checklists, general personality inventories, measures of specific clinical problems, and measures of intelligence or learning (Schwitzer & Rubin, 2015, p.87). The use of either type of measure to assess and identify mental proficiencies or deficiencies depends on the purpose of evaluation.
