Research Paper of Gender Sexuality Communication
Research Paper Summary
Your research paper for this class is a short analysis paper. You may work individually, or with one co-author.
For this paper, you will select either: (a) a current event/news story (that occurred within the last two years), (b) a media text, or (c) a personal experience to analyze. Whichever you choose, it must be relevant to gender/sexuality and communication.
You will also need to select two (2) communication concepts that are reflected in (or can be applied to) your chosen current event/media text/personal experience. In your paper, you will explain your chosen concepts and apply them to your event/media text/personal experience. In doing so, you will integrate scholarly literature into the development of a cohesive, well-reasoned argument. [NOTE: If working as a team of two, you will need to apply three (3) relevant course concepts].
If working individually, you need to cite a minimum of four scholarly sources (excluding, or in addition to, readings assigned for class). If working in a pair, you need to cite a minimum of six scholarly sources (excluding, or in addition to, readings assigned for class). You should cite at least two scholarly, peer-reviewed, sources per concept.
Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to give you experience with: (a) locating and interpreting scholarly peer-reviewed sources [you need a minimum of four, excluding (or in addition to) the readings assigned for this class] and (b) writing an academic research paper. Additionally, this paper should help you to acquire a deeper understanding of specific aspects of gedner/sexuality and communication that you find particularly interesting. This means that you will need to present information in your paper about the concepts you have chosen that goes beyond what is covered in the lectures and in your textbook and other readings.
Concepts: For the research paper, you should select two relevant communication concepts (or 3 if working in a pair) that interest you (e.g., stereotypes; heteronormativity; intersectionality; hegemonic masculinity). The concepts selected should be narrow in focus.
For example, you should not select nonverbal communication, as this is much too broad. Instead, you might select one specific form of nonverbal communication (e.g., haptics). For some people, it is easier to select your current event/media text/personal experience first, to help narrow down potential concepts. For others, it is easier to select concepts first, and then identify a current event/media text/personal experience to apply them to.
Sample Idea:
Sample 1. Current Event: An Analysis of The 2021 MET Gala
Two applicable concepts: Gender Nonconformity – Gender nonconformity is the challenging of roles, dress, behaviors, and appearance society expects people of a certain gender to have (Fixmer-Oraiz & Wood, 2019).
Queer Identity Expression – Identities are expressed via verbal (e.g., labels) and nonverbal communication (e.g., clothing and dress). Queer identity expression refers to expressions that disrupt normative gender/sexuality boundaries.
Sample 2. A Case Study Analysis of Herbivore Men
Two applicable concepts:
Masculine Gender Norms – Masculine gender norms are the unwritten set of rules for men that society deem as appropriate or inappropriate (Fixmer-Oraiz & Wood, 2019).
Labeling/Naming – Labeling is when a group or individual use labels to define or express their identity (Fixmer-Oraiz & Wood, 2019). Labeling/naming is a powerful tool for social change because labels can legitimize identities and experiences (Fixmer-Oraiz & Wood, 2019).

Literature Support
91-84 points The context and relevance of the issue, as well as a clear description of the study aim, are presented. The history of searches is discussed. |
Methodology
58-53 points With titles for each slide as well as bulleted sections to group relevant information as required, the content is well-organized. Excellent use of typeface, color, images, effects, and so on to improve readability and presenting content. The minimum length criterion of 10 slides/pages is reached. |
Average Score
50-85% |
40-38 points
More depth/information is required for the context and importance, otherwise the study detail will be unclear. There is no search history information supplied. |
83-76 points
There is a review of important theoretical literature, however there is limited integration of research into problem-related ideas. The review is just partly focused and arranged. There is research that both supports and opposes. A summary of the material given is provided. The conclusion may or may not include a biblical integration. |
52-49 points
The content is somewhat ordered, but there is no discernible organization. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on may sometimes distract from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
Poor Quality
0-45% |
37-1 points
The context and/or importance are lacking. There is no search history information supplied. |
75-1 points
There has been an examination of relevant theoretical literature, but still no research concerning problem-related concepts has been synthesized. The review is just somewhat focused and organized. The provided overview of content does not include any supporting or opposing research. The conclusion has no scriptural references. |
48-1 points
There is no logical or apparent organizational structure. There is no discernible logical sequence. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on often detracts from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
