Research Methodology Proposed Method and Design
The proposed research method for this study is the Qualitative Method. To address the proposed problem statement, research purpose, and research questions one must gain the perspective of the subjects participating in the research, thus making it the most appropriate methodology. The intent of the proposed study is to explore the perspectives of Florida nursing home health care workers regarding the temporal dynamics of the demanding health care ecology created by the COVID-19 pandemic, while also examining their perspective on leadership’s role in acknowledging and seeking preventative strategies for pandemic associated health care worker burnout in 2020.
Educating the reader on the intent of the study is a partial prerequisite to scribing the method section within the qualitative realm to give them an understating of the research process (Creswell & Creswell, 2018). The Qualitative Method provides the framework necessary to gain a true understanding for the lived experience of the subject allowing the researcher to draw conclusions and possibly identify solutions to the problem.
The research design is a very important component of dissertation process. The concern, difficulty, or collection of matters initiate the course of action; however, the researcher’s viewpoint of the world will govern the exploration of a matter, similarly alignment of methodology will be impacted (Creswell & Creswell, 2018). The research design falters if one of the sections is not reasonably aligned (Creswell & Creswell, 2018). The research design for this proposed study is the Needs Assessment. A needs assessment involves gathering data about an inferred or perceived need within an organization that could be fulfilled through education (Altschuld & Kumar, 2010).
The selected research design for the purpose of the purposed study is associated with the qualitative method design. The type of needs assessment determines if the collected data will be quantitative, qualitative, or a mixture of quantitative and qualitative (Sleezer et al., 2014). To gain an in-depth understanding and the perspective of the research subjects it will be necessary to interview them through a survey. When qualitative data is mandatory, the researcher will need to determine if a focus group will be utilized or individual interviews, or to incorporate open-ended questions (Sleezer et al., 2014). The interview via survey component of the data collection qualifies the research for the qualitative method design.
The needs assessment method was selected for the proposed study because the problem statement established the framework to explore the perceived need or gap in practice. The specific problem of the proposed study seeks to explore temporal dynamics created by the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of Florida nursing home health care workers. The specific problem of the proposed study also seeks to explore Florida nursing home health care workers perspective on leadership response in acknowledging and seeking preventative strategies for health care worker burnout. A needs assessment may result in an educational plan that details the organizational problem and inadequacies education can correct, and how it will be achieved (Altschuld & Kumar, 2010). The needs assessment could help the research drill down to the root cause of the perceived problem. The needs assessment has three components that researchers use to gather data, evaluate the data, and generate a plan for education (Altschuld & Kumar, 2010).
The purpose of the proposed study is to explore the perspective of Florida nursing home health care workers as it relates to their experience with COVID-19. Needs assessments are valuable to specialists who support efforts through deliberate, person-centered, executive, or communal requirements (Sleezer et al., 2014). The purpose aligns nicely with the needs assessments design due to the of the exploration of the human experience and possibility of programing establishment and application. Alignment is required between the purpose and the method, if a researcher desired to use qualitative methods, it is probable that the purpose will explore a component of social practice through an idiosyncratic understanding (Creswell & Creswell, 2018).
The needs assessment design can assist a leader to identify the root cause of a problem and make organizational changes to improve operation. Every need assessment is designed appropriately and is unique to its environment (Altschuld & Kumar, 2010). The purpose of the proposed research study and purpose of a needs assessment complement each other through their objectives thus justifying the alignment. The purpose of a study presents the rationale for moving forward with a specific research design (James & Slater, 2014).
Research questions are the questions the researcher is attempting to answer through the data being collected. The selection of wording used by the researcher in their research problem establishes a correlation between the research questions and the methodology (Creswell & Creswell, 2018). For the proposed study the research would like to define how Florida nursing home health care workers describe temporal dynamics of the demanding health care ecology created the COVID-19 pandemic, and how Florida nursing home health care workers describe leadership’s role in acknowledging and seeking preventative strategies for COVID-19 pandemic associated burnout.
These general questions drive the questions that will be asked of the subjects to obtain the necessary data required for an in-depth discussion. A needs assessment is completed to solve general questions (Altschuld & Kumar, 2010). The alignment is established through the research questions as together they question who is impacted, what impacted them, when they were impacted, where they were impacted, how they were impacted, and why they were impacted.
