Goal: The goal of this essay is research and discover information regarding factory farming, including why it exists and the consequences it has. In addition, the goal is to form an argument regarding the practice of factory farming
You will need:
1) Read all of the assigned handouts from the modules.
2) Finish reading Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer.
3) Access to the library database.
Prompts:
Factory farming provides the majority of the world’s animal-based food, including chicken, cattle, and pigs. In order to feed over 7 billion people, animals are raised and slaughtered in factory farms, making it quick, easy, and inexpensive to feed people.
1) What is factory farming?
2) Why does it exist?
3) What are its consequences?
4) What are the alternatives?
5) What is your opinion of factory farming?
In well-written, well-argued, and well-researched essay, discuss factory farming.
Directions and Requirements:
1) In order to understand something today, we must understand its past. This essay requires research into the history of factory farming. What is it? Why does it exist? Did you know that the American government owns the patent on two kinds of chickens: those that lay eggs and those used for human consumption. The government owns the DNA formula for those two kinds of chickens. If this is true, what does it mean to us? To the animals? To our future? These are the kinds of questions a critical thinker will ask.
2) A good critical thinker does not jump to conclusions. I want you to follow this method before writing your essay:
Research, Think, Judge
First, research the topic. What are critics saying about this topic? What other opinions are there about this topic? Then, think about your own opinion and how much you learned from this research. Finally, form an opinion (hint: that opinion you form becomes your thesis).
3) Once you have the opinion, it is time to write an essay.
4) This essay must be 7 or more paragraphs, which includes the introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and conclusion paragraph.
5) This essay is a cause and effect essay. You should focus on the history and reasons for factory farming first (this is the cause). Then, focus on the effects today.
6) You must have 5 or more sources in your Works Cited.
7) Of those source, one must come from Chaffey’s library database. We will work with the library and learn how to use the campus database. In addition, another source must be from the book Eating Animals. In other words, you must quote the book directly, even if you use it as a reference to find other sources.
8) Here is an example of how an essay might look:
Paragraph 1: Introduction
Paragraph 2: What is factory farming?
Paragraph 3: Why does it exist?
Paragraph 4: What are its consequences?
Paragraph 5: What are the alternatives?
Paragraph 6: What is your opinion of factory farming?
Paragraph 7: Conclusion
This is not the only pattern to follow; I only offer it for your consideration. Other methods exist, including combining paragraph 2 and 3 into one paragraph, giving you the freedom to include a They Say paragraph or another argument about its consequences (you might discover that factory farmed cattle pollute the air more than cars, or that factory farmed pigs are the number one transmitter of the influenza virus).
9) Here is an example of a Works Cited citation for a database source (this is taken directly from your MLA handout)
Jackson, Carol, and Jonathan Francisco. “Cyber Bullying and its Psychological Effects on
Adolescents.” American Psychological Association Journal, vol. 87, no. 4, 2004, pp. 124-130. Project Muse, 2018.
If you follow the steps in the MLA handout, you will see how this was built.
11) While writing this essay, please be conscious of your thought process. Be aware that you have assumptions and biases that affect how your form an argument. Toulmin’s Model will also help you disseminate information. The goal of research is to learn something new, and you might gain insight into ideas about this topic. The end result might be a new opinion on a topic you never thought about very deeply.

Literature Support
91-84 points The context and relevance of the issue, as well as a clear description of the study aim, are presented. The history of searches is discussed. |
Methodology
58-53 points With titles for each slide as well as bulleted sections to group relevant information as required, the content is well-organized. Excellent use of typeface, color, images, effects, and so on to improve readability and presenting content. The minimum length criterion of 10 slides/pages is reached. |
Average Score
50-85% |
40-38 points
More depth/information is required for the context and importance, otherwise the study detail will be unclear. There is no search history information supplied. |
83-76 points
There is a review of important theoretical literature, however there is limited integration of research into problem-related ideas. The review is just partly focused and arranged. There is research that both supports and opposes. A summary of the material given is provided. The conclusion may or may not include a biblical integration. |
52-49 points
The content is somewhat ordered, but there is no discernible organization. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on may sometimes distract from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
Poor Quality
0-45% |
37-1 points
The context and/or importance are lacking. There is no search history information supplied. |
75-1 points
There has been an examination of relevant theoretical literature, but still no research concerning problem-related concepts has been synthesized. The review is just somewhat focused and organized. The provided overview of content does not include any supporting or opposing research. The conclusion has no scriptural references. |
48-1 points
There is no logical or apparent organizational structure. There is no discernible logical sequence. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on often detracts from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
