Description: For this paper and presentation, you will be asked to observe and analyze a cultural space using concepts and discussion from Chapter 4. There are two parts to this assignment: an essay and a brief presentation. We will hold presentations before the essay is due.

Thought Essay Directions:

First, you should choose a cultural space that you are familiar with. This space could be your hometown, your current neighborhood, an architectural landmark (ex. a gov’t building or historical site), a restaurant/mall/commercial area, a particular location at CSUN (approval required if choosing CSUN), etc.

Then, in a 3–4-page essay you should answer the following questions:

Using at least one credible outside source, provide a brief background of the cultural space.

What is the relationship between you and the cultural space that you chose?

What characteristics shape the space (i.e., cultural symbols, images, colors, sounds, architectural style, etc.)? How does the space shape the kind of interactions people have with one another?

What kind of norms and values are associated with the cultural space?

What are avowed and ascribed identities associated with the cultural space? Who has access to the space, and how do they use it? Who is denied or discouraged to enter the space?

Based on your observation, is the space segregated, contested, and/or hybrid? Explain.
