Reflection on Social Justice
To me, social justice means the state in which human beings interact in the society is guided by virtues that ensure fair access and compassionate distribution of economic gains, political rights, and social opportunities for all, with great consideration for people with great need. This implies that people in this society understand the role each member plays in the society and have goodwill for everyone. Social justice requires that people of every race be treated with equal consideration in all spheres of life irrespective of their origin, religion, and cultural background. Regarding George Floyd’s life, social justice would institute an investigation that led to the demise of the culprit and administer justice irrespective of the color and societal supremacy of the offenders.
The killing of George Floyd was a form of injustice against the blacks, a situation that has existed for years in many white criminal systems. Racial discrimination and other forms of stereotype and discrimination contribute to social injustice. This implies that the minorities miss on essential services or do not receive equal treatment in public offices because of their differences. The minority is perceived inferior or unfit for the full benefits of the social, political, legal, and economic benefits of the society. Social justice will eradicate all institutions and policies that encourage discrimination, stereotype, and racism by all means (Capeheart & Milovanovic, 2020). Justice will therefore call for an equal measure of the law against police officers that murdered George Floyd, just as it would be if the offender was white police.
Language is very critical in social justice as it provides the platform to explain and understand the concept of social justice, and enables the transformation of individuals’ mindsets and attitudes that increase knowledge of existing social justice frameworks in society. To attain competency in discussing social justice issues and formulating institutions or frameworks that will foster social justice, it is important to understand the role of language in filling the communication gap in society. Understanding the language of the majority is a prerequisite for fighting for social injustice. Legal proceedings in George Floyd’s case for instance would only be understood by people that understand the language of the whites. This implies that language opens the individuals in the society to equality. Without the knowledge of the language of the white criminal justice system, George Floyd would be coiled without notice. It will empower people to be bold and forthright in seeking what they deem just. Language, therefore, equalizes all people regardless of their race, culture, religion, gender, ethnic origin, and other cultural differences (Avineri et al., 2019).
