This week’s assignment requires you to envision that you have been contacted by a local school to present a seminar for refugees. Your seminar should be entitled “Refugee Training Seminar.” In this seminar, provide tips for refugees that reflect the latest research findings on promoting acculturation for refugees that are struggling to navigate America’s apprenticeship system. The seminar should also include content related to understanding the global interconnections of oppression and human rights violations, and theories of human need and social justice and strategies to promote social and economic justice and human rights.
Create an outline for the seminar of the topics you will cover and the tips you will provide. Be sure to include information for each of the following domains: communication, job training, housing, transportation, and health. Also, provide information about theories that will help trainers understand their role in the integration process especially related to recognizing and understanding the historical, social, cultural, economic, organizational, environmental, and global influences that affect social policy. Be sure to include specific strategies for understand how personal experiences and affective reactions may affect the trainer’s assessment and decision-making. Additionally, because social workers are knowledgeable about evidence-informed interventions to achieve the goals of clients and constituencies, including individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities include information about discrimination, assimilation, integration, and at least one activity for those in attendance to engage in that is about language and certification (this could be an activity to teach necessary communication skills, such as a role-play to guide refugees into the country’s apprenticeship system for vocational training). Be creative!
Social workers understand theories of human behavior and the social environment, and critically evaluate and apply this knowledge in evaluating outcomes. You must also create a handout(s) to give to refugees who attend your seminar. It can be a brochure, a resource guide, an annotated bibliography; whatever you believe would be most useful for residents who are looking for information on promoting integration for refugees.
