M4 Disc – Recognizing Culture
Consider the following scenario:
You are a human service worker who was born and raised in the United States. You identify as Christian. You are interviewing Muslim parents who are concerned about their 16-year daughter’s desire to adapt to Western culture. She wants more freedom and wants to choose how she dresses and with whom she interacts. Though her parents follow traditional Islamic beliefs, they do recognize that their daughter has a desire for peer acceptance and friendships, however, protecting their daughter’s Muslim identity is still important to them.
Include the following in your initial discussion post:
What challenges will you face as a human service worker in helping this family?
What elements and facets of Muslim culture will need to consider when providing help?
How can you demonstrate cultural respect and competence in this scenario?

What challenges will you face as a human service worker in helping this family?
Personal challenges that will be faced as a human service worker helping this family is respecting differing religious views. Bias of human service workers should be considered when helping this family. For example, personal ideology of gender roles vastly differing from those of individuals of Muslim faith. Additionally, being mindful of their religious celebrations which are very different from those practicing Christianity.
What elements and facets of Muslim culture will need to consider when providing help?
Elements and facets of Muslim culture that will need to be considered when providing help will include understanding and respecting gender boundaries, considering dietary needs (if applicable), and accommodating schedules as Muslims pray five times a day.
How can you demonstrate cultural respect and competence in this scenario?
Cultural respect and cultural competence can be demonstrated in this scenario by researching the Muslim religion and having an informed understanding of Muslim culture. Cultural respect can be demonstrated by asking questions about areas in which more education is needed. Cultural competence is always going to be an ongoing matter for human service workers and therefore it is essential to also be able to identify personal biases to prevent unintentional harm to clients with different cultural backgrounds.

Being respectful and open to other cultures is important not only on a personal level but also on a global level to share the place with other people and beings
Every country has rules and is made up of diverse cultures. But as a human service worker this scenario is personal and a family matter, this should be between the parents and daughter I do not think we get to decide if the daughter needs to follow or not, all we can provide is according to the law in the USA he or she has right to freedom of religion, language, and speech. when she turns 18.
Muslim culture Have extremely strict customs and beliefs, they pray five times a day, it would be a great challenge in trying to understand especially if the human service worker is a Christian. Women have a certain way of dressing and interacting with men, so all the customs and beliefs need to be taken into consideration.
A talk with the daughter and the beliefs of the religion can be achieved by laying down some rules and boundaries in connection with religion and living the life she wants. When she turns eighteen, she has the right to live her life the way she wants irrespective of the religion she chooses.
Personal experience I was born in a middle eastern country being a Christian was tough, we had no church we used the theatre as one, we had to cover our heads, and could go out only with our dad. Every tv show was censored, but we followed their rules not changing our religion, we could keep our religion but had to follow most of their customs. The bottom line we are all humans with just different religions and cultures.
