Please tell the class a story of you getting sick when you think of or eat a certain food. Please be descriptive – maybe not with the getting sick part – but with the story leading up to the getting sick.
Please see the example below.
We went to Corvette Diner with my son and my parents (aka Grandma and Grandpa) with my son. My son loved yellow mustard. He was putting it on everything he could eat – and was being silly and was dipping his dill pickle that came with his burger in the mustard. He was eating more yellow mustard than french fries. In photo with a spoon. Of course with Dad in charge I thought it was funny. Maybe I should learn how to parent…
We were down at liberty station, so there is a cool park not far from the diner, so we went to play. They have one of those Spin things. He is known for barfing on car rides longer than 4 minutes – and gets motion sick every time he goes to any sort of amusement park.
We went to the store on the way home to get stuff for dinner and he totally barfed all over me and the canned food isle at the Rosecrans Sprouts market. I put down my basket and left….
To this day he cannot eat mustard, but still loves the motion rides (and gets sick about 40% of the time).
If I were to respond to this –
Contingency learned – Mustard made me sick.
Unconditioned Stimulus (US) – Spinning
Unconditioned Response (UR) – Nausea (and often barfing)
Conditioned Stimulus (CS) – Mustard – yellow
Conditioned Response (CR) – loss of reward for mustard.
The mustard was conditioned to be the stimulus that caused him to get sick – it most likely contributed to his getting sick – but the CAUSE was the US (spinning)
NOW it is just yellow Mustard that has Latent inhibition (unconscious influences on his conscious behavior).
He still like the motion ride (I cannot stand them any longer – I totally get sick!!) but I still like mustard.
