PSYC 290 Independent T-Test
PSYC 290: RDA I
Independent t-test Lab
ـ
You may complete this assignment in pairs. (Remember, a “pair” consists of exactly two people.) Be sure to write both your names on the assignment, or you will receive no credit.
Short Answer
- When do we use a one-sample t-test as opposed to an independent t-test? Explain. (1 points)
- Come up with your own idea for a study where you would use an independent t-test to address your hypothesis. Explain why you would need to use an independent t-test. In so doing, you should clearly identify your IV and DV and explain how they are being measured. (4 points)
SPSS Problems
For SPSS problems, you will produce a full APA-style write-up of the results that clearly explains your hypothesis and findings. Be sure to proofread, and use proper APA format with respect to decimal places (2, except for p-values), italics, etc. Use the provided examples as a guide. Note: you should include a copy of your statistical output for all of the analyses.
- Although the overall average brain weight of adults is 1,345 grams, and the average head size is 3,675 cubic centimeters (cm3), a researcher there are gender differences in both. A researcher collected the brain weights of 237 individuals in Indiana, PA to see if men and women differed in their brain weight and head size. Use the dataset HeadSize.sav for the following questions.
- Did male and female Indiana, PA have different brain weights from each other? Write out results using proper APA format as demonstrated in the guide. (5 points)
- Did male and female Indiana, PA have different head sizes from each other? Write out results using proper APA format as demonstrated in the guide. (5 points)
- We asked a sample of N = 60 college students to report how much they paid for their last haircut. Did females (on average) spend more money on their last haircut than males? Use the dataset Haircut.sav for the analysis. Write out results using proper APA format as demonstrated in the guide. (5 points)
- Researchers want to know if individuals are perceived to be more intellectual if interviewers head an audiotape of their interviews as opposed to reading a transcript. Using the datafile HiringStudy.sav, compare the intellect rating of participants based on interview condition (audio or transcript). Is there a significant difference between the groups? Write out results using proper APA format as demonstrated in the guide. (5 points)
- Researchers want to know whether older individuals have better memories than younger individuals. Using the datafile AgeWords.sav, compare whether college-aged individuals (on average) recall more words than middle school students on a memory test. Write out results using proper APA format as demonstrated in the guide. (5 points)
- We sought to compare whether there are age differences in the ability to maintain balance while concentrating. Young (n = 8) and elderly (n = 9) participants stood barefoot on a “force platform” and were asked to maintain a stable upright position and react as quickly as possible to an unpredictable noise by pressing ah and held button. The noise came randomly and participants were instructed to react as quickly as possible. The platform automatically measured how much each subject swayed in millimeters in both the forward/backward and the side-to-side directions.
- Using the datafile Balance.sav, did younger participants (on average) maintain their forward/backward balance better than elderly participants? Write out results using proper APA format as demonstrated in the guide. (5 points)
- Using the datafile Balance.sav, did younger participants (on average) maintain their side-to-side balance better than elderly participants? Write out results using proper APA format as demonstrated in the guide. (5 points)
- A number of studies have tested whether police officers are better than the average person at determining when someone is lying (Kassin & Fong, 1999; Meissner & Kassin, 2002). In the datafile LieDetection.sav, a sample of police officers and college students watched 20 videos of people either lying or telling the truth. After each video, participants were asked whether or not they thought the person was lying, and they rated how confident they were in their answer (on a scale from 1-10). Later, researchers calculated each participant’s accuracy (i.e., # of correct judgments, out of 20) and their mean confidence rating (across all 20 judgments).
- Did police officers produce more accurate (i.e., use the accuracy variable) judgments than college students? Write out results using proper APA format as demonstrated in the guide. (5 points)
- Were police officers more confident (i.e., use the confidence variable) in their ability to detect lies? Write out results using proper APA format as demonstrated in the guide. (5 points)
Copy and paste all of your output to the end of this lab. Do NOT attach a saved output file from SPSS; it will not be counted. Grading will be based on accurate analysis of the results and proper APA-style write-up.
