Research Experience Requirement: As part of the requirements for the course, students will participate as subjects in three hours of psychological research conducted by members of the Psychology Department or perform an equivalent written paper assignment.
This gives you firsthand experience in psychology research, either as a participant and/or evaluating published research. If you do not complete this requirement, you will receive a grade of Incomplete for the course. This requirement must be completed by the end of week 14 [Monday, May 16].
Note that you can reach the 3 credit hours through any combination of papers or research study participation.
For research participation, a study lasting ½ hour or less earns ½ credit hour. A study lasting ½ to 1 hour earns 1 credit hour. A study lasting 1½ hour to 2 hours earns 2 credit hours, and so on. Students may accumulate a total of 3 credit hours in any combination of research participation and equivalent research paper. Research participation is due by the end of week 14 [Monday, May 16].
Each study—including the type of research and specific days and hours participants are needed — is posted online personal participation account by clicking the link “New Participant? Request an account here.” Complete your name, enter an email address that you check regularly, and select the course in which you are enrolled. Your account information will be emailed to you immediately. Note: Participation credit can be obtained only if you have a working account. Email Professor Curtis D. Hardin for account questions.
Once you have an account, enter the system and click “Studies” to see a list of available studies and how to sign up for participation. The system keeps track of your credit and allows you can monitor your participation record.
Assign your earned credits to this course which should be labeled something like: Shane Psy 1000 NTBF Spring 2022 or Shane Psy 1000 NTDF Spring 2022. This way I can view the number of credits you earn through research participation.
For the equivalent research paper, you may write a critical review of a scholarly psychological journal article describing a study instead of participating in an experiment. The critical review should include: (1) A concise summary of the key points discussed in the article; (2) A brief description of any supporting data or evidence; (2) Your reaction to the article. The article can come from one of the following approved open-access journals.
PLOS One Psychology: http://journals.plos.org/plosone/browse/psychology
Frontiers Psychology: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology#articles
Each paper must be at least 400 words (not including the header, title, or citations). You must upload the article, in addition to your paper, to the class Blackboard website. Each 400-word paper counts as 1 credit. Thus, you would need to write 3 papers to fulfill the 3 credit hours. Papers are due by the end of week 14 [Monday, May 16].
Here is where you can upload your research experience papers. Remember that you need 3 total credits of research experience, which can be earned through any combination of research participation or papers. This submission site is for the papers if you choose to complete the research experience that way. Here is some more details from the syllabus on what is expected for the papers.
