Preparing for Lab Report 2 Activity
This activity provides with an opportunity to practice a number of important steps you will need to complete for Lab Report 2 (coming up next week) by developing a hypothesis, finding the needed datasets, downloading & merging them, and running preliminary analyses to make sure multiple regression will work.
The first step is to read through the all the module content this week and review any prior modules needed to recall how to find, download, merge, and clean NHANES data in SPSS. Note: You may NOT used the NHAHES trimmed data set that we’ve been used in some prior homework. If this doesn’t make sense to you, please let me know. You may use NHANES datasets that you have built earlier in the course if they contain the variables you need. You may also add onto your existing NHANES dataset.
The next step is to download, merge, and clean (assign code values, set missing values, etc.) the NHANES data you will use. You may need to review these steps from our earlier work in the course. It has been a while but the assumption is that you’ve had this material and practiced it before.
The final step is to run preliminary analyses to make sure the variables you’ve selected will work well and that you want to continue with them for Lab Report 2. . Sometimes, the cleaning and preliminary analyses reveal issues that require you to change your variables for the report or you may find you simply want to explore another relationship.

To complete the activity, answer the following questions and submit your response in a word document.
DATASET: Same as lab report 2. Please see attached lab report two to understand which variables are to be used for this assignment.
- Briefly describe what is meant by:
- a nationally representative sample and
- Sample weighting
- Provide the names of the 2 NHANES 2015-2016 data sets will you use. Be specific. Note if you’ve downloaded and used them before or are working with new datasets.
- Describe a general research question related to the hypothesis you will test. State the hypothesis and indicate the predictor (independent variable), outcome (dependent variable) and confounder.
- For example (please don’t use this example, develop your own) let’s say you want to know if alcohol use is related to reported health status. The research question might be, do those who use alcohol regularly report better physical or mental health outcomes than others? The hypothesis might then be, people who report regular alcohol use will have poorer self-reported physical health than those who do not. You would need to determine which variables you could use to test the hypothesis (keeping in mind, you should have looked through the variables available before settling on a question and hypothesis to make sure data are available).
- Describe the three variables will you use and create a histogram or bar chart for each.
- variable names
- variable label,
[Order Now]
- which dataset is each one in,
- values & meaning, if appropriate (if the variable is something like age, you don’t need to tell me the meaning, but if there are categories, etc. let me know.)
- Histogram or bar chart
- Do you need to do any recoding for out of range values, to set missing values, or any other recoding to be able to run your analyses?
- Confirm that the variables chosen will work by completing the steps described in the module pages. Write a few sentences describing what you did to test this and the outcome.
- Run a simple regression, paste your output tables, and write 1 – 2 sentences that describe the interpretation of the output, or in other words, the result of the test.
- Run a multiple regression controlling for at least one other variable and paste your outcome tables.
9. End with a few sentences that describe any challenges you faced and/or ongoing questions you have. Also, let me know your confidence level to approach lab report 2.
