Selecting a Topic for work on Projects 1 and 2
Step 1: Post 3 Potential Ideas to the DB
Carefully read through this entire prompt BEFORE posting any ideas to the DB.
Topics MUST be business-focused, as this is an advanced business writing course (avoid politically driven business debates and debates of ethics/morals, as those are typically bifurcated into yes/no answers and tough to work properly for this type of report).
Topic choice often affects the outcome of the assignments. For instance, if your research report topic is merely descriptive, the sources you’re likely to find are usually limited to doing a good job of explaining the topic. Descriptive topics lead to reports that merely summarize the findings. A more analytical topic (a topic that has more than a yes or no answer) calls for a variety of sources that speak to the complex issues raised and therefore leads to what we call a “research rich” report.
Topics should not focus in on the future of an issue, as the future hasn’t happened and there isn’t research to fully assist (as all the source content would be hypothetical). For example, the future of the FinTech industry would NOT be a good main topic for our work. Instead, focus in on a current debate or conflict swirling around the FinTech industry that might prove more beneficial (and its future would then be a small part of that overall topic).
To help you get started…
Brainstorm topics concerning a debate or controversy in the business field. Note: don’t think of a debate as a conflict with only two sides; instead, see a debate as a conflict that has multiple potential solutions. What is the current state of that debate? What challenges does it face? What opportunities are developing? What are questions you have about this debate? Why would this be interesting to research for this class? Why would this be an important issue for your peers to read about?
Are there debates or conflicts of interest from your classes here at NU? Something of interest that you’ve explored on co-op? The idea of a business topic can be quite inclusive, so I know this part of the process can be challenging. The business of education isn’t really a business topic, as it’s so focused on education. The same can be said regarding the restaurant business, professional sports, or the fashion industry (I’m using these as general examples): just because something is a “business” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s an appropriate topic to explore for a report like the one we will be writing. Instead, look for a business issue/debate/controversy that could be the focus and perhaps use an industry to help explore it. Sometimes it’s helpful to think of concepts at this early stage. For example, the key focus of inquiry could be a conflict around new marketing techniques (the business concept at work here is marketing). In order to show the conflict in action, the report could explore the fashion industry as an example of the marketing techniques. But the focus of the report wouldn’t be fashion; instead, it would be on the issues of marketing.
Additionally, these topics might have a limited interest to your peers, the intended audience of Project 2’s report. Hopefully, you can find a topic that’s connected to your major or minor, but it’s not a requirement, per se. One of the key goals of Project 2’s report is to enlighten your peers about an interesting topic that would be valuable to know about as a student in the business school.
Here’s an example of what I expect for your potential ideas centered around business concepts:
Social Media Marketing… okay, that’s quite broad. Well, what about social media marketing? What are its benefits? Problems/areas of concern or debate in the field of marketing? Where do experts in the field agree or disagree on how/why it’s used? A good way in which to hone that into a workable topic at this stage… What are the benefits of using social media brand ambassadors in order to appeal to millennials? This could then be narrowed in even further after preliminary research (certain social media sites… certain products… a specific millennial group, etc.). Social media and brand ambassadors are a hot-button issue and this type of inquiry would certainly benefit students in class.
If I were doing a report in my own discipline, here’s a sample of a workable potential topic: The rise of online writing classes. This is a current issue in my field that is constantly debated.
Here are a handful of questions I might ask about my topic: How are online classes effective in teaching writing? How do assignments need to be re-worked to be more helpful in an online environment? How can peer review be effective online? How can instructors encourage student interaction and sense of community? What is the role of reflection in online classes? I could keep going, but I think you get the point.
