Running Head: RESPONSES 1
RESPONSES 2
Question
Is there any relationship between the style of policing chosen by a department and the ethical practices it feels are legitimate for its officers to use in carrying out their duties? How is police corruption related to policing styles? Do you feel that there is widespread police corruption in America? What do you base your position on?
Response 1
I’m believe there is a style chosen by a department and the ethical practices so officers can carry out their duties in the most ethical way. But I believe it depends on the community and crime rate. I also who is in charge plays a vital role as well because if you have a chief who is honest and actually follows the code of ethics his officers will most likely be the same way. Policing is definitely one of the most difficult jobs with the highest standards. There is an enforcement code of ethics that holds officers to the highest expectations. Even off duty officers are expected to uphold the same integrity and ethics as they would while wearing the badge. I believe corruption can be related to police styling because police styling influences every aspect of how police officers do their policing.
Honestly, I’m in between on if there is a widespread of corruption because not all officers and police department have integrity issues. I believe corruption definitely occurs but there are certain tactics in play in police departments to handle issues such as these. a lot police officers feel like they need to protect one another with the blue code of silence which is a code amongst officers that they use to prevent corruption in the department from coming to light. I base my opinion on all the criminal justice classes I’ve taken this semester and they all commonly mention the corruption issue.
Response 2
In every police department of law enforcement there are a set of established rules and regulations that must or should be followed. These rules and regulations give police officer’s guidelines to follow when exercising the duties entrusted to them. There is a direct correlation between the relationship between the style of policing chosen and the ethical practices used by its officers. Each department head not only set the policies but is responsible for ensuring that those policies are enforced. Police corruption relates to police styles because if the climate of the police department is not conducive to ensuring the policies are strictly adhered to then most often a police department will experience police corruption, misconduct and unethical practices exercised by their officers.
In my opinion, I do feel that there is widespread police corruption in America. Police are charged with the duty to protect and serve its community and when they breach that trust it erodes the confidence and reduces the expectation of safety that the community should feel when encountering a police officer. Two of the most explosive cases of this decade where police brutality and corruption was evident was in the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery and the police brutality case of George Floyd. In the first case Mr. Ahmaud (black) was shot and killed but the perpetrators (white) were not immediately arrested or charged by the police department, which was a total violation of Mr. Ahmaud’s civil rights. In the second case a police officer, Derek Chauvin was video taped kneeling on the neck of a suspect for up to nine minutes and none of the other officers with him prevented him from slowing killing George Floyd (New York Times, 2021). In both cases there was gross miscarriage of justice that resulted in the death of two unarmed black men.
Question –
Mays and Ruddell compare the crime control model and the due process model. Which is a better approach to fighting crime in our society? How does a department select which approach to take in their local community? How do politics and theories play into the selection process?
Response 1
The crime control model and the due process model have similarities but are different too. The crime control takes upon bringing the crime rates and violence rates lower within the communities at large but its force also would be to enforce the against any indiual at any cost. While the due process really focuses on building productive citizens and also protecting them. I really can’t say which is a better approach to fighting crime in our society because both are produced in their own rights but when officers become corrupted that’s when there’s a major legal and political problem. A department selects an approach to take in their local community by focusing on the crime rates and what actions are being taken place to better their communities. One major in seeing great results of none violence or a decrease in crime rates is building a relationship with the community and the people. Trust is a major factor especially when there have been so many people dying at the hands of corrupted police officers. Politics and theories play into the selection process hearing and acting upon the citizens’ “cry” voice. Government officials must take a stand in removing police brutality against people in general based on race and gender. There should be a mandatory evaluation of each officer’s conduct and work ethics on an ongoing basis until results can prove that policing is better than ever since a major cleanup has begun. Citizens want to see changes within the policing department around the nation and remove cops that are giving the police department a bad name. I must say that every cop isn’t a bad cop. There are some awesome police officers that are out to protect the communities and their citizens.
Response 2
I feel both are a good way to fighting crime in our society but we need to give more power to crime control model, like expanding police powers so its easier for them to do a legal arrest, searches and the other components of police work. They also need to fix the the legal process to make it go faster so that way their cases move along quicker, and those who are victims get justice faster. But one part of due process that I feel needs to take precedent over these is that we equally focus on both victims rights and defendants we need to focus so each get the justice and proper sentence in order to make sure one is not above the other. I think a department should ask the community which one they would prefer to have and change it base on how it works. I’m sure departments see how strong crime is in their community and choose a model that fits that. Ultimately the goal is no crime and for communities and society to feel safe and be safe. Politics play into it because of funding from not only local government but federal government if they back their parties candidate. Politics inside the department for who to become chief and who gets a promotion can also be an issue on how they choose a process some officer can be more crime control while others are due process and cause issues within the department. They’re are theories that community based accountability could work they would have community resident oversight over policies and which method of process they choose based on the communities needs.
