PEERS RESPONSE:
Engage the community
There is no denying that covid-19 has provided a plethora of ethical and social issues like high unemployment issues, starvation of poor families, an uneven distribution of vaccines, and the spread of the vaccines. These issues are making it hard for the residences of California. I believe one of the biggest ethical and social issues is climate change. Climate change is defined as a global warning that is driven by human-induced emissions of greenhouse gases which results in a large-scale shift in weather patterns. Climate change has led to extremely hot summers and extremely cold winters (Senator Dianne Feinstein, 2021). Furthermore, there have been increased incidences of flooding in the country and California state.
Apply a theory and ethical reasoning
The theory that can be applied in these incidences of situation is Utilitarian. Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that states that the actions that maximize happiness and well-being for affected individuals are morally correct. According to Thames (2018) “But for the utilitarian, what is most fundamental and essential to morality are the consequences of our actions and, in particular, whether the overall positive consequences outweigh the negative ones” (Sec 3.1. p 4). Climate change is man-made and therefore, the actions of the individuals lead to climate change. The consequences of our actions such as driving cars, using fossil fuels, and burning them lead to the emission of greenhouses that causes climate. It is vital to highlight that climate change can be handled with changes in human behavior such as encouraging the use of electric cars, the use of renewable energy to power factories and homes. The changes in behavior are attributed to deontology theory’s categorical imperatives. The application of these solutions can be universal laws that help to reduce climate change not only in the United States but also worldwide.
