Discussion Response
Chapter 1
When I started reading the first chapter, I found a lot of interesting points. One of them is “Widening Gap Between the Rich and the Poor at Different Ages”. The gap between the rich and the poor has a very important impact on children’s cognitive and socio-psychological development (PPT 16). Different gaps between the rich and the poor result in a child having different families and different schools. What’s more important is the different social resources they can receive. Most wealthier children receive a better education, a better learning environment, and always have confidence in contact with others. Poor children are the opposite of rich children. These innate conditions will have a great impact on the psychological growth of children.
I also found a very interesting “the bystander effect” (1.2 videos) in the video “5 Psychology Experiments You Couldn’t Do Today”. “The bystander effect, or bystander apathy, is a social psychological claim that individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim when other people are present; the greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that one of them will help. This reminds me of a real example in my childhood. I remember it was Chinese New Year, my parents and I were watching fireworks. Suddenly the bush next to the me was lit by firework. I asked my parents to call the fire department immediately, but they told me that someone else would do it. Fortunately, in the end, someone called, and the fire was put out. This effect occurs in many scenes of our lives, and at the same time, many people who wanted to help at the time were forced to integrate because of the social environment.
Chapter 2
In this video and this website (Erik Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development), they divided the child’s growth stage into different stages, each of which has important significance. I think that for a person, his first few stages “Trust vs. Mistrust”, “Autonomy vs. Shame”, and “Initiative vs. Guilt” are the most important. Because it is these stages that help a child grow into an adult. I learned that encouraging and believing a person during childhood is very important for a child’s growth. This helps a child build his most important thing in the future, which is self-confidence. Before me, I was always an inferior person. I never expected and confident in myself. Because in my childhood, no one tried to communicate with me, and the negative energy that came with it was nowhere to be released, and then these negative energies became part of my body, which caused an irreversible impact on my personality.
Chapter 3
In this chapter, I learned about genes that I didn’t know before. “Genome and Epigenome” (Sci show) I learned from the video that the original gene can’t affect the whole behavior of a person. The gene affects only some characteristics and basics. What makes a person different is his personal choice, and how they choose their lifestyle. This also directly denied those racial discriminations. There are always racially discriminatory who say that other races have low IQs, and they do not know how to manage themselves, which in turn becomes a reason for their colonization. But they were wrong. Be it a good person or a bad person. It does not depend on the genes but yourself.
Chapter 4
Prenatal development is very important, and the degree of fetal development also largely determines his health. Many congenital diseases are threatening children’s health. And some parents’ lack of understanding of congenital diseases can also threaten their children’s lives. I have seen a documentary called “Chinese Doctor” before. One day a couple of parents picked up a baby on their way home. When they took the baby home, they found that the baby had a Cleft lip. The adoptive parents sent the child for treatment, and the child grew healthy after treatment. Without the kind adoptive parents, the baby would face death. It is the ignorance of the baby’s biological parents that have led to the abandonment of the child. I think the whole of society should strengthen the popularization of disease knowledge so that more people understand what kind of diseases can be treated.
Epigenetics and the influence of our genes
“Epigenetic marks can be influenced by the environment” This is the core argument of this speech. After watching this video, I realized that genes are not the only reason to determine a person. It also made me firmly realize that racial discrimination and class discrimination are wrong. Even a worn glass bottle can still be polished like a diamond. There are very few genes that can be determined. So those who live in poverty should not give up. They can study hard to create a good environment for themselves and a good future for your children. We still could change lives, and this is the American Dream.
