Demacrocy Essay
This assignment is based on the premise that the study of power, privilege, and oppression expand the way that we understand current events. It provides multiple opportunities to examine the workings ofinstitutional power, and the impacts on marginalized populations. Students will rely on the application of the sociological perspective to understand and provide a critical analysis to the issues raised by the exercise.
For this assignment you are expected to view one episode of Democracy Now! (DN!) each week. This news broadcast includes stories from all over the world, with a focus on issues of inequality, oppression, and a multitude of social problems. The show is generally divided into several segments: (a) world news headlines and (b)1-3 stories with personal interviews.
The show airs M-F and can be found on your local PBS station, YouTube, or as a podcast on multiple platforms or at democracynow.org. For this assignment you must view an episode each week, beginning at Week 2. The episode you view must air during the week in which the assignment is completed. For example, Week 2 of the quarter corresponds to the following dates: 1/10-1/16. Because the show only airs M-F, you would need to view a new episode of DN! that aired between the dates of 1/10 – 1/14. Do not search the archives for older episodes in application of this assignment. If your paper does not correspond to the proper time frame, it will not receive credit.
After you have selected and viewed your episode for the week, you are asked to address the following prompts in a short informal journal entry:
3.Connect this story to the Eitzen text, films, or podcasts. You may do this by discussing concepts/theories/commonalities/etc. between the course text, films, or podcasts, and the section of DN!that you viewed. It may be a bit difficult in the beginning but will become easier as you progress through the material. You must identify and explain at least two connections between the course materials and the DN! episode. Be specific and provide examples.
Expanded Journal Option: (2.5 Points): The Expanded Journal Option is an addition to your DN! Journal. This option is offered for DN! Journals assignments for Weeks 6-10. It is entirely optional. It is offered as an opportunity for you to earn extra credit by expanding this weekly assignment. You may choose to complete this as many times as you wish, or not at all. It is entirely up to you. Please keep in mind that expectations are high for extra credit points. You will not receive full credit if you do not apply yourself to this task:
DN! Resources: The Democracy Now! website has multiple resources that offer opportunities to deepen your understanding of a myriad of social problems. Take some time to explore the website, paying particular attention to three specific links: “Web Exclusives”, “Topics”, and “Columns”. A search of the links will reveal numerous interviews and articles that will offer expansions of existing and related stories. Another option for additional materials can be found within of each “Daily Shows” transcript pages. Simply open the transcript of the Full Show and to the left, below the video image (as you look at the page) you will find that relevant materials have been added and simply titled “Links”. These resources generally consist of articles, videos, books, and other relevant materials from the people/organizations interviewed on the show for that particular day.
For your Expanded Journal Option, you will need to search from these menus to find material that corresponds to the Social Problem studied for the week, or to one of the interviews conducted on the show for that particular day. You will select one of these additional resources to summarize and connect, following the instructions below.
2.Connect (250 Word Min): You may do this by discussing concepts/theories/commonalities/etc. between the course text, films, or podcasts, and the expanded material from DN! that you viewed. You must identify and explain at least two connections between the expanded material and either the DN! episodeor the Social Problem assigned for the week. Be specific and provide examples.
(Please be advised that the material you select must be substantive and significantly add to your DN! Journal. When selecting video materials, such additional interviews, select an interview that is at least 10 minutes long or longer. Columns and Articles should be substantive. Selection of very brief interviews or articles will not receive credit. You must produce your best work to receive full credit.)
