FELLOW STUDENT’S POST
Sydni Bigelli 2/5/23, 8:20 PM NEW Post 5
One of the most significant aspects of the culture is that it has long been ruled by members of the majority race, which resulted in institutional racism, slavery, segregation, and other forms of discrimination against people of color. People of color are still disproportionately targeted and imprisoned today despite the fact that the constitution and laws guarantee them equal rights and opportunities. Two ideas that the dominant race uses to target minorities through the criminal justice system are the war on drugs and the war on terror. People of color are disadvantaged historically in terms of education, employment, property ownership, and political engagement; this shows that the criminal justice system targets them because they lack the ability to resist injustice. First off, it is obvious that white officers and judges predominate in the criminal justice system, which causes them to arrest more persons of color and punish them harshly relative to the white majority. Second, because white people and people of color are seen differently by police officers due to the existence of white privilege, there is an increase in violence committed by white majority officers against people of color. Last but not least, the lack of representation at the top levels of the police and judicial sectors prevents white officers from gaining sufficient experience and exposure to persons of color. As a result, they are compelled to treat persons of color differently.
