• Prepare: Complete the module including the textbook chapter and the lecture “Middle and Upper Paleo” as you’ll need this background context to provide informed analysis of the primary source.
• Read the entire “Nisa” article pdf (4.5 pgs) Download Hist 3- Primary Source Reading, Nisa- Paleolithic Woman in the 20th Century-1.pdf
• Review the rubric for this discussion response (Click the 3 dots on the top right of this assignment and select “view rubric” – this has the breakdown of exactly what you need to include for the assignment.)
• Choose TWO of the below questions and write a paragraph response on each one. (See rubric for word count.)
• Be sure to separate your two responses into individual paragraphs and label the question you are answering: give the question number, or paste in the question itself.
• Your analysis should be primarily in your own words.
• Give specific examples from the document (see rubric). Short quotes are fine since this is a primary source document, but avoid long block quotes- these aren’t part of your word count.
• Each of your examples needs a simple citation from the article at the end of the sentence in parenthesis. (NOT a works cited at the end). Example: (“Nisa” pg 3, paragraph 1)
• These citations are to substantiate your work, but also, they help me to count the number of examples you provided (see rubric for requirements), which makes my grading of your work much more objective and fair!
• Add synthesis connections from the modules (reading and/or lecture content from the current module or the previous one) to support your analysis. You need to connect the primary source document to what you have learned about Paleolithic people. (See rubric for required number of synthesis connections.)
• Add a simple citation in parenthesis at the end of the sentence (not a works cited at the end!) to identify your synthesis examples that includes the module title, and the specific part of the module you are citing. Again, these help me to count your synthesis connections and identify breadth in bringing in multiple types of sources for your connections. Citation examples:
• (Module: “Most of Human History, 2 Million Years”- Lecture Slides “Lower Paleo” Slide 13)
• (Module:  “Mid Paleo to Neolithic” Strayer, “Ways” pg 37)
• NO OUTSIDE SOURCES! Do not use any internet information for this assignment! This is NOT research.The point is to bring together elements of the module which is the synthesis aspect.
• Respond to AT LEAST one peer (150 words, or two replies of 75 words each).
• Option 1 Comparative Analysis: Respond to someone who chose at least one different question than you did OR who answered the same question but very differently. Do you agree with their interpretation and the evidence provided? Why or why not? Be sure to COMPARE it to your responses- did you draw from different parts of the module for your evidence? Did you notice different things in the source, or maybe the same things but you reached different conclusions about them? You only need to analyze and reflect on ONE of the two responses of your peer).
• Option 2: Peer Review: Write a peer review and help a peer get a better grade! (Please spread out the replies- if someone already has one peer review, choose another post). Even if you don’t get a peer review back, (or you don’t get a very good one), the process of writing the review may well help you to double check your own work! Main points to consider in your review:
• See that they followed format instructions
• Carefully check to see that they addressed each part of the prompt
• Check that they labelled their questions and met the word count range
• Check the rubric carefully for other specifics (number of examples, number of synthesis connections, synthesis citations, etc)

Question options (choose at least two and label your responses with the question itself):

1. How useful do you find Nisa’s account for understanding much earlier Paleolithic people? How similar or different was her account from the descriptions and examples of Paleo life provided in the module?
2. What does her account indicate about San attitudes towards sex and partnership? How does this fit into our class materials about paleo sex and relational behavior?
3. How does Nisa understand God or the Divine? What is her conception of her participation in ritual? Connect this to our class materials on religious practice in the Paleolithic era.
4. In an overall assessment of Nisa’s portrayal of San culture, do you find it to be realistic, romantic (meaning idealistic), or critical? What passages support your assessment?
5. What evidence do you find in her account of contact with outside groups and the modern world? Does this make her account too problematic? Why or why not? What might be missing from her account that you encountered in the module content on Paleo life?

• Your analysis – the write up should be primarily in your own words, based on your ideas (not primarily quotes from the documents)
• Historical context- your response should demonstrate your knowledge of the historical background from the module AND previous class materials as relevant. Bring in key terms and concepts.
• Evidence- Substantiate your analysis with short quotes from the primary source documents, or specific references to information from the documents
