A commonly used description of the connected world has been that we now live in a “global village.”

Indeed, we are much more connected than earlier (we can, for example, virtually meet anyone in another part of the world almost instantly). However, as the readings in the second section, “Life in the Age of Global Connectivity,” show, the space-time compression is much more textured – it can, for example, impact different social groups differently and that too in wide ranging ways (transforming family relationships, everyday lives of individuals, and even organizing of social movements).
