STEP 1: There are nine questions listed below. Read them and choose the FOUR you would like to answer (your choice).
STEP 2: Answer the FOUR questions you have chosen. Your answer to each question should not exceed one page (four pages in total). Make sure you clearly identify which questions you are answering.
STEP 3: E-mail your answers (in a WORD file) to khinrichs@csuchico.edu – by 12:00 PM Thursday May 14, 2020. This is the same email address that is on the syllabus and the same email address you have used all semester. It is also listed on the CSU Chico website.
ATTENTION:
- There are multiple good answers (i.e. I do not have one preconceived right answer for each question).
- As noted above your answers should be limited to one page per question. I understand that one page is not enough space to fully address each question and consequently your answers will not necessarily be exhaustive. However, use your space wisely and be conscious of both the breadth and depth of your answers.
- The test is open book and open notes. As such, I am not looking for personal opinions. I expect your answers to draw on the readings, materials posted on Black Board, and the class discussions. You may if you wish, but you do not have to use any additional material.
- This exam is NOT an opportunity to express your political views. Your political opinions have nothing to do with this exam. I will not read anyone’s opinion of any particular political leader. I want you to relate the leadership scholarship at your disposal to leadership challenges in organizations.
QUESTIONS
- Empathy: How could the circumstances surrounding the pandemic be an opportunity for leaders to develop and demonstrate empathy? How about for you personally? What could a leader do to use challenging experiences as an opportunity to grow as a leader?
- Trust: Identify consequences associated with the presence of trust or the absence of trust in organizational leaders during a crisis? Provide insights about the relationship between trust and effective leadership.
- Team Leadership: What unique challenges might the current public health crisis present to team leaders? How might team leadership best respond to those challenges?
- National Culture: How might cultural differences explain variance in reactions and responses to the pandemic?
- Global Leadership: Consider the attributes of a global leader. How might those attributes provide a leader with an advantage when it comes to leading an organization through a crisis?
- Organizational Cultureand Values Based Leadership: In what way might an organization’s culture and values contribute to surviving a crisis? What steps can a leader take to assure that the organization’s culture and values will be contributing factors to surviving a crisis and emerging as a stronger organization?
- Moral and Ethical Leadership: How might a moral/ethical based leader have an advantage when navigating an organization through a crisis? Are there potential disadvantages to being a moral/ethical leader during a crisis?
- Servant Leadership: In an organization that is in the midst of a crisis, particularly the crisis that organizations are now facing, in what ways might Servant Leadership be a more effective or less effective approach than other leadership approaches?
- Spiritual Leadership: Consider the primary contention of servant leadership: That organizations benefit when its leadership acts to provide employees with a sense of meaning and a sense of belonging. In the context of a crisis, state what actions taken in conformity with the Spiritual Leadership model might be particularly effective and why you believe they would be effective.
