Media Sources Impacted the Youth Culture Discussion

Choose some mediated aspect of a popular culture. For this journal I want to talk about how Twitch and other media sources (Tik Tok, YouTube, Instagram) has impacted/affected the youth culture in the US. Talk about how kids aren’t playing sports/playing outside as much and now we are seeing a lot of children’s time spent indoors spending time on these media sources.

After you have completed TWO readings for the week, answer the two questions about agenda setting and agenda building theory. The answer should be academic in media and communication. QUESTIONS:

1. Does the anonymity enabled by the internet diminish the likelihood that people’s attitudes, beliefs or behaviors will be silenced? Why or why not?
2. What is a recent event or events that can be explained by spiral of silence theory? In those examples, who was silenced? What viewpoints did they hold that led those around them to silence them?

The spiral of silence theory is a political science and mass communication theory proposed by the German political scientist Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann. It states that a social group or society might isolate or exclude members due to the members’ opinions. This stipulates that individuals have a fear of isolation. This fear of isolation consequently leads to remaining silent instead of voicing opinions. Media are an important factor that influence both the dominant idea and people’s perception of what the dominant idea is.
