Media Parenting Summary Assignment

Each student will view a total of two television episodes (it needs to be 2 different series) that portray families with young children.

You should use either comedies or reality shows about families with YOUNG children. Shows that are focused mainly on teens, such as “Life of an American Teenager” are not suitable. Examples include: The Bill Cosby Show, Everyone Loves Raymond, Modern Family, Wife Swap, Nanny 911, Supernanny, Toddlers and Tiaras, Parenthood, The Goldbergs, The Middle, Trophy Wife, About a Boy, Major Dad, The Fosters, The Brady Bunch.

Organize your paper into the topics listed below and bold the topics with the information under each. Use the following format to summarize each program.

Summary of Sitcoms

Include the following:

Summary of plot for this segment

Guidance techniques used with children (please click on link below for more information) ( found in the attachment)

Identify the family strengths that you see (look at chapter 2 and “strong families”)

The “message” you feel children watching this show may receive about marriage and parent-child relationships.

Parenting Styles and Interactions: Analyze the sitcom using Baumrind’s parenting styles (read information about these styles in the text, powerpoint and handouts). Identify which of Baumrind’s parenting styles are being used by the adults and why you chose this. What kind of interactions do you see with the families?

Include ALL of the items above to get full credit. Use language from your text when describing, communication, interactions, and family strengths. Stating the family “gets along”, “are happy”, or “don’t fight” will not get points.

Comparison of Sitcoms: After summarizing each show, comparing and contrasting the programs, including their guidance and communication strategies, answer the following questions:

How did the parenting members of the family handle some of their responsibilities, such as economic, child care, nurturing, building relationships, etc (refer to chapter 2 and 3 of text)?

If you were a child, what messages would you be receiving from the media through these shows about marriage and parent-child relationships?

How do you think this program would influence the way you might parent your children? As an adult, do you think watching these programs would exert any negative or positive influence on your parenting and on your marital relationship if you were married? How?
