Teacher inquiry is a powerful vehicle for teachers. It can be used to untangle some of the complexity that occurs in the profession, to raise teachers’ voices in discussions of educational reform, and ultimately to transform assumptions about the teaching profession itself. As you will examine throughout this module, when teachers engage in an intentional study of their own classroom practice, it can have a profound influence on student learning and educational reform. This is because teachers are more likely to facilitate changes in their teaching based on knowledge they discover on their own. It is important to realize that there are several different types of research methods. It is possible to use quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods in your research project. The Mertler (2020) text provides an explanation for each and notes when it is appropriate to use each. As you are exploring the teaching testimonials and reading the study examples, identify the research method each is using. Then, try to determine why that particular research method is used. This will help you decide which research method you need to use when you begin your Action Research Project.
