How would you describe Mark Zuckerberg’s strategic leadership approach? What did you find to be compelling and enlightening?
Mark Zuckerberg has been strategic in his approach to make Facebook the leader in what some would say is the leader in social networking sites. Mark Zuckerberg’s idea on his organization is far greater than a social networking site. The first approach that has made Facebook so successful was to build dynamic core competencies, which is the fact that they have continued to develop and update their core competence in connecting people through an online social network.
Hitt et al. (2010) describe a core competence as a major capability to perform important tasks quite well and contribute to the organization. Organizations build dynamic core competencies by continuing to develop their competence to be at the forefront of the industry (Hitt et al., 2010).
Facebook has continued to develop and is still at the forefront of building social networks. Facebook continuously launched new features to improve the experience for its members and their biggest competitor, MySpace, lost sight of user’s experience with the network (Ray, 2012).
Paul Polman of Unilver explains in an interview with McKinsey & Company (2009) that execution is strategy for organizations and in his organization 90 percent of their strategy is execution. Facebooks execution to develop and implement new features for their customers is evident.
Facebook has had a great influence on globalization because it supports globalization by encouraging collaboration across cultures (Ray, 2012). It is easier now for a woman in a small town in South Dakota to connect across cultures to someone in Zambia with the click of the I Like button on Facebook. Communities can connect and grow personal networks across the globe.
Because of the great impact that Facebook makes to globalization this puts them at risk for aggressive competition like Facebook did to MySpace, which was at one time the leader in social networking. The key to success for Facebook is innovation and development, as well as anticipating the needs of the communities and the globe they operate in.
