There are many of these laws that I didn’t recognize until I read the description. The one law that I was not aware of and knew nothing about was the law under advertising. I did not know that there was such a law or that it was in the works of being covered on the first amendment, which is weird because advertising is everywhere now.
“The first amendment protects speech about politics, religion, and culture most highly” (Stovall 254). Basically, this gives you the freedom of speech to be a journalist. Freedom of speech, now that we have higher technology, is everywhere. For example, Facebook, one of the most popular displays of freedom speech there is. Of course, there are even limitations as to what you can say, just like in journalism, you cannot openly make a threat or obscene comments.
Now in advertising the first amendment has started to cover some of these. Stovall states, “Although First Amendment protection for advertising seems to be expanding, there is still a considerable amount of government regulation. This is particularly true for advertising that may mislead consumers, which you will recall is not protected by the First Amendment” (2014). In advertising. the ads that are displayed must be truthful and legal ads in order to be protected through the first amendment.
These ads and use of the first amendment also include social media platforms. As journalism is expanding into the social media realm, it is easy for the first amendment to be forgotten. However, if you read the fine print in most social media terms they include not abusing the right to post things freely. That means you cannot threaten or make obscene posts. These posts can be reported and removed. They can also, if severe enough, include the authorities being notified.
